A £56.7 million road improvement scheme designed to ease congestion and enhance road safety is currently underway in Carmarthenshire.

The A477 St Clears to Red Roses Improvement scheme is being constructed for the Welsh Government by main contractor SRB Civil Engineering. The 9.3km road will bypass the villages of Llanddowror and Red Roses, across the River Hydfron and will pass through several environmentally sensitive areas.

Once complete the scheme will improve journey times on the trunk road, will reduce severance and traffic pollution and will also help to improve air quality for people living close to the existing road.

A new flood relief culvert will also be constructed west of Pont Newydd and improvements will be made to the footways and lighting between St Clears roundabout and Pont Newydd.

Over the past two years the Welsh Government Project Team has undertaken extensive work to assess the impact that the road will have to the surrounding environment. Two public inquires also took place in 2011.

To prepare the site for the implementation of the new scheme archaeological surveys were conducted around selected areas of the route, fencing was installed to create boundary points and a number of trees and hedges were removed.

Construction work began on the project in February 2012. At the beginning of the improvement works Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones attended the site to emphasise the importance of improving Wales’ transport infrastructure.

First Minister Carwyn Jones, said:

“Over the past few months we have invested nearly £80 million in improving our country’s roads. Transport is vital to our everyday lives and is crucial to support the economic growth of Wales. That is the reason we’re putting considerable investment into schemes that will deliver our vision of a modern and sustainable transport system.

“In addition the development of these schemes provides a direct boost to the local economy by providing local employment and training opportunities during construction.”

The majority of the work on the A477 St Clears to Red Roses Improvement scheme will take place on new sections of road which are located away from the A477 route. With working taking place off the main route, disruption for road users will be kept to a minimum however there may be some traffic delays as the work connects back to the existing road.

A477 St Clears to Red Roses Improvement scheme is scheduled to reach completion in January 2014.
