As 2013 dawns, work on the Cheriton Road Sports Ground in Folkestone, Kent enters its final stages – when complete the £7.8 million development will provide some of the best sporting facilities of their type in the country.
The aim of the project is to provide improved facilities to enable the establishment of a centre of excellence for hockey, cricket and netball – with increased opportunity for membership growth and development. The project further seeks to encourage an increase of public participation in sporting activities.
Ongoing discussions with the sports’ governing bodies is assisting this ambition and helping to identify how this facility can be linked to national and regional strategies. This will raise the profile of these sports and introduce boys and girls to them where they can develop as far as their talent and aspirations wish to go.
When complete the new improved facilities will include an artificial turf pitch, upgraded main cricket pitch as well as a new sports hall to serve as an indoor training facility and help to accommodate currently deprived sports.
The new pavilion will provide a home for community club based sports with new changing and storage facilities, administration area and meeting room, large shared bar area suitable for functions with a connected observation terrace.
The project has been entirely funded by a donation from the Roger de Haan Charitable Trust and the land provided by Shepway District Council on a 125 year lease. The project is a model of how the Trust seeks to work in partnership with other organisations and can help leverage further funding from external sources.
The facility is owned and run by The Cheriton Road Sports Ground Trust, a registered charity made up of volunteers from local sports clubs. Currently the sports facility is home to Folkestone Cricket Club, Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club, Folkestone Town Netball Club and Folkestone Running Club. It is hoped, with this multimillion pound investment, that more local sports clubs will use the facilities in the future.
