Gatwick Airport Operations Building

Gatwick Airport is currently in the midst of a ÂŁ1.2billion six year redevelopment project which has the aim of improving operations and passenger experience.

Works range from new aircraft piers and modernised baggage systems to new retail, security and immigration areas. The programme of improvements is an investment Gatwick Airport Ltd is making in partnership and co-operation with the airlines.

One of the most recent developments of the programme has been a new ÂŁ5million Operations Building, located in the centre of the airport.

Construction started in December 2012 and is expected to be completed by January 2014. The building is set to provide the airfield operations team with a much needed new facility.

Ben Green, Head of Piers, Infrastructure and Airfield Projects at Gatwick Airport is responsible for ÂŁ350million of the development and speaking about the Operations Building he said:

“We’re currently in the early stages of the development, with work starting on site in December 2012.

“We’re now in the process of breaking out the existing pavement and constructing the foundations. We will be erecting the steel frame in March and should be complete by the end of the year.

“The building is at the centre of the airport next to the fire station. It will be the hub for managing the operation of the airfield, including parking for operational vehicles; and up to date training facilities that can be used for safety briefings for contractors and other teams”.

“Also the site has been designed specifically for the need of my airfield colleagues. At the moment staff are working in a 27 year old facility that has come to the end of its operational life – this new facility will ensure their day to day operations on the airfield continue to run smoothly.”

When complete the Operations Building will comprise of offices, engineering workshops, locker rooms, shower rooms, break-out spaces, a rest area and control room.

Morgan Sindall are the architects on the build and Vinci Construction are the main contractors.
