Union Street Bar – the latest exciting venue from Gordon Ramsay Group has opened its doors in Borough.
Located downstairs from its restaurant Union Street Café, the bar is open from early to late evening and is a welcome addition to what must be one of London’s most dynamic and energetic boroughs.
Headed up by Mancunian bartender Abdulai Kpekawa – formerly of London’s Experimental Cocktail Club, Roux at the Pembury, and Sosho Match – this ‘urban living room’ boasts classic and creative cocktails and reflects the menu of its upstairs restaurant with weekly changing additions, making the most of seasonal ingredients.
“Borough has such an exciting energy”, explained Abdulai. “We wanted to offer our guests something a bit different and add to the great mix that is already well established here. I like using fresh ingredients in cocktails and I look forward to evolving the drinks as the seasons progress.”
Innovative creations, such as – The Duke Meets the Queen – will all vie with classics such as Mezzo e Mezzo made with Nardini Rabarbaro and Rosso topped with soda.
The interior of Union Street Bar has been designed by Russell Sage Studios. With direct access from street level, the spacing and layout of the seating takes inspiration from the former home living rooms of the borough and are juxtaposed with distressed walls and exposed ducting that are a nod to the area’s industrial past; adding a raw, urban energy.
Coffee tables; laid back leather sofas and chairs with tactile scatter cushions; standard lamps that focus soft lighting on the seating areas and richly coloured Persian rugs all add to the home-from-home ambiance and provide the perfect backdrop to relax with a few friends, or find a cosy area for a more intimate gathering.
Artwork too has been carefully considered and commissioned through the nearby Stolenspace Gallery. Celebrating the local community, the work interprets what life signifies for the artists who experience daily life in the capital’s constantly evolving urban environment. The artists exhibited include, Eine, Rawn, D*face, Word to the Mother, David Bray and Cyrcle.
With an upstairs restaurant, chilled music vibe and cosseting atmosphere, Union Street Bar and its Italian inspired cocktail menu promises to bring a unique and innovative flavour of the Republic to this vibrant corner of South East London.
