Hooked

The Hook, St Peter Port, Guernsey

Situated on the seafront of St Peter Port, The Hook is a fantastic sushi, steak and seafood restaurant that has been making a name for itself since the summer.

The Hook fired up its ovens for the first time in June 2013 and so far the feedback has been extremely positive.

The Hook is divided into two, with a sushi bar and cocktail bar situated on the ground floor and a sea food and steak restaurant on the first floor. All of the sea food is fresh, whilst the steak is sourced from high quality Scottish beef.

The Hook is the first restaurant for proprietor Sam Jarrold, who has previously achieved success in the bar industry. Speaking to Premier Construction about his latest venture, Sam Jarrold said:

“The feedback has been great; we have had a lot of repeat custom and have been fully booked every Friday and Saturday, with majority of the weekday evenings busy too. The Hook has certainly caught people’s attention.

“As my first restaurant it was incredibly important for me to get this restaurant right. I invested a great deal of time, money and effort into this site, and it was certainly a risk bringing a new sushi restaurant to Guernsey. The Hook is the first restaurant to have a dedicated sushi bar, so going into a market that is already quite saturated is a challenge, but the quality of The Hook has really stood out!”

Prior to opening as The Hook, the site formerly housed a pizza restaurant, so the building was stripped back and re-fitted to give it a stunning makeover. The new-look restaurant is unrecognisable from what it once was and showcases exposed conduits, a granite work top and associated features which give the site an industrial feel.

Sam said:

“The idea for The Hook was to create quite a minimalist decor, which recalled the building’s heritage which was once a tobacco warehouse and a sweet factory. The wooden floor and the spiral staircase are the only elements that remain within the restaurant from what it once was.”

Upon entry into The Hook, guests are greeted with the 30-cover sushi bar where chefs prepare a fantastic selection of tempting dishes, using as much locally sourced produce as possible. Diners are able to watch their meals being prepared at the sushi bar, whilst the cocktail bar provides the perfect pit stop for those just wanting to pop in for a quick drink.

Situated on the first floor is the 50-cover restaurant, which opens between 12pm and 2:30pm for lunch and 6pm to 10:30pm for dinner. The restaurant overlooks St Peter Port Harbour and is capable of catering for guests requirements, from small intimate occasions to large parties. To enhance the offering at The Hook, a takeaway sushi service is also available from 11am every day.

Guernsey-based chartered architects Holmes Limited provided all architectural services on The Hook, whilst Sam oversaw the entire project, appointing a number of local contractors throughout the refurbishment.
