Boosting Bristol’s green credentials

Bristol Resource Recovery Park, Avonmouth

SITA UK’s £22 million state-of-the-art materials recycling facility in Avonmouth – which underwent commissioning in the summer – is powering ahead, allowing local businesses to put their waste to good use!

The new facility has already created over 30 jobs, with SITA UK planning to introduce a second shift before the end of 2013 in order to manage an increasing volume of good quality dry mixed recyclables.

James Pike, SITA UK’s General Manager Processing, South West, said: “With Bristol set to be European Green Capital 2015, it gives businesses in the area an extra incentive to enhance their own green credentials.”

James added:

“Our new facility can handle 80,000 tonnes of materials each year so there is ample opportunity for businesses to put their waste to good use and reduce their landfill tax bill at the same time.”

SITA UK is particularly keen to secure reliable streams of uncontaminated dry recyclable materials from customers in the region, so that it can provide a consistently high quality product to re-processors.

Constructed on brownfield land, the new materials recycling facility can accept and sort a wide range of dry mixed recyclables, including cardboard, paper, plastics, cans, glass and polythene. It has advanced features and high speed processes to identify and separate these materials and is located at the company’s Bristol Resource Recovery Park in Merebank Road, Avonmouth.

The materials are then put into bales by the on-site baling machine and readied for collection by re-processors who can give these materials another life, helping reduce the pressure on the Earth’s scarce resources.

SITA UK operates a commercial fleet of recycling vehicles across Bristol and the wider area. Businesses interested in having a free waste audit to understand how they may be able to reduce what they send to landfill can contact SITA UK on 0870 421 1122.

Established in 1988, SITA UK has a long and proud history of delivering environmentally responsible and innovative waste solutions.
