Serving up seasonal French Mediterranean cuisine, Villandry Grand Café is quickly making a name for itself in the nation’s capital.
Each café offers up a light flexible approach to all day dining, alongside a selection of homemade takeaway choices which utilise local produce where possible.
To date, Villandry has three sites; Great Portland Street, Bicester Village and most recently St James’ which opened its doors for the first time on November 21st. Situated at 12 Waterloo Place, London, just south of Piccadilly, Villandry St. James’s is housed within a 1913 Edwardian baroque building and presents desirable dining for all.
du Boulay Contracts Ltd was the main contractor on the project, whilst leading architectural practice, Stiff + Trevillion was the architect behind this latest site for Villandry.
Speaking to Premier Hospitality, Stiff + Trevillion Architects Director, Richard Blandy, said:
“Villandry St. James’s is principally a grand café, located within an area of London that is being revitalised, creating a new restaurant quarter whilst at the same time redeveloping all the surrounding buildings.
“The new Villandry was installed within a Grand II Listed building which is very decorative in a classical style, with large columns. We played to the building’s strengths making it into this grand café. We worked with interior design Willie Nickerson to create the correct look.”
The furniture at Villandry St. James’s is bespoke and includes such elements as banquette seating and a large bar with a bottle display; very much in keeping with the look of a classical French brasserie. The site is split across three floors and includes a basement which houses the kitchen and staff areas; the ground floor dining area; and a mezzanine level for private functions.
Richard added:
“The interior of the café makes use of sumptuous colours which truly highlight the panelling.”
Villandry St. James’s marks the third time that Stiff + Trevillion have been involved with the brand and it is something which the practice is very proud of.
Richard commented:
“Work on the project ran smoothly and it is something that we were very excited to be involved with. We have worked on the two previous Villandry sites and we worked with Willie Nickerson on the Portland Street site.”
In keeping with the previous grand cafés in the Villandry portfolio, the latest offering on Waterloo Place serves up an all day dining experience, making use of ingredients sourced from the finest independent and regional producers. Villandry serves natural, artisanal products, including fresh breads, rich chocolates, fine wines, mouth watering meats and cheeses and is the perfect place to enjoy a break from the world.
Villandry is also ideal for those wanting to celebrate in style as each site is capable of accommodating party bookings. Whether it’s a business dinner, a birthday party or a Christmas celebration, Villandry can cater for guests’ needs with a set menu from just £30. Villandry St. James’s includes two private dining rooms, both available for hire, catering for up to 60 guests for drinks and canapés.

Modo Commercial Kitchen Design
Modo Commercial Kitchen Design specialise in the provision of bespoke design solutions for the hospitality sector. The company began in 2011 and provide a range of solutions from commercial kitchens, food service counters and bars, to cold rooms and back of house operations for wide range of clients.
Modo Commercial Kitchen Design conducts a great deal of independent work alongside a regular list of clients, including luxury lifestyle company Brompton Brands, Jaspers Catering and James Martin, including James’ brand new restaurant at Manchester235. Most recently, Modo Commercial Kitchen Design worked on the new Villandry restaurant.

“We offer a boutique service tailoring each project to clients’ exact needs and prior to setting up Modo we had a vast experience working in catering houses. We offer a personal approach to each project, meaning a great deal of time and detail goes into each project, providing the correct understanding of all the elements that make up each scheme.
“This is our fourth project for Villandry. We were brought in to provide design solutions to bars, kitchens and back of house areas, but midway through the project we were asked to design and build the wine wall in the basement. The wine wall was custom made and is a real focal point of Villandry.”
