A Mexican dining experience

Peyote- Cork Street, Mayfair, London

The remodeling of a central London restaurant space into a modern, high end Mexican restaurant is almost complete.

Peyote is situated on Cork Street in Mayfair and offers diners a quirky Mexican Hacienda themed bar and restaurant to explore.

Work on site began at the end of August 2013; the final touches are being added to the venue with only a DJ booth and reception desk to follow. Sagrada, a London based Interior Design Consultancy, were the project architects and were given a specific brief to transform the space which previously housed an old restaurant.

Sagrada’s brief was to create a new interior that was completely different from the previous design. The interior was stripped ready for the Peyote fit out; the walls were stripped back and previously concealed spaces were used to create a feature wall.

The venue comprises two levels; the ground floor dining and bar space and the basement restaurant. The restaurant continues on the lower ground where the kitchen is visible to diners.

The basement is tiled with reclaimed terracotta which matches the scale of the ground floor timber floor. Pendants hang from the exposed ceilings and a skull feature wall acts as a focal point when entering the space.

The ground floor space was reshaped by opening up the bar and making an impressive tequila room visible through the bar’s transparent back. The toilet arrangement was also reconfigured to free up more space around the bar. The staircase which leads down to the lower ground restaurant and taco bar was reworked to improve accessibility to the space.

Peyote honours individuals who regularly visit the restaurant, allowing them to reserve lockers to hold their preferred tequila’s. Tequila connoisseurs are bound to be at home in this venue due to its vast collection of liquor.

The 100 cover restaurant boasts a variety of materials and textures including fabric covered walls and distressed herringbone floor on the ground floor, as well as cladding existing columns in brass. The floors metal finish follows through to the bar details and entrance screens. Laser cut screens at the entrance of both spaces give glimpses of what is to come. The space was designed to giving a dynamic and interesting dining experience. The exterior finish of the building has minimal signage.

The main contractor for Peyote was Target Shopfitters Ltd; an interior fit out contractors. Target Shopfitters Ltd offer complete fit out and shopfitting services to numerous business and public sectors including retail, hotels, restaurants, bars, sports and leisure centres and care homes. Having been in operation for over 50 years they have worked with high profile clients including Calvin Klein, Delaunay, Aubin Wills and Mercure Greenwich Hotel.

Their services include design, joinery, project management, interior fitouts, architectural metalwork, facilities management and mezzanine floor installation. Project Architects Sagrada is run by David d’Almada and Richard Saunders who were charged with developing the project from concept to the finished scheme. The lead designer on the project was Roberta Audisio who worked with the main contractor and client closely to bring the scheme to life.

The biggest restriction the on site team came up against was the speed with which the project had to be completed in. With such a fast track project, careful consideration had to be made on what was possible in the time frame, and that the finishes approved could be sourced and manufactured in time.

“We have worked with the owners before and so it was really important for us to continue our work with this group. Our brief was to create a kitchen that offered a lot of open space and was theatrical in the sense that diners could see inside.

“An important aspect of the project was also to ensure the kitchen equipment fit cleanly within the relatively tight constraints of the space. We worked alongside the design consultants at Sagrada to ensure the kitchen complemented the rest of the venue.”

The company pride themselves on their dedication to quality in every aspect of their work from the design process, sourcing equipment, through to installation and after sales support.
