Stockethill Church site is redeveloped

The construction of 32 purpose built 2-bedroom flats is nearing completion.

The development has been commissioned by Langstane Housing Association who will offer the completed apartments to those on its waiting list.

The site, in Stockethill, Aberdeen, was previously home to the Stockethill Church which was demolished under a previous contract commissioned by Langstane Housing Association. The development comprises of four blocks entitled A, B, C and D; with Blocks A, B and C stretching two storeys and Block D is three and four storeys.

The blocks are arranged in a horseshoe formation and have been constructed using insulated timber frame clad in a combination of synthetic granite, smooth cement render on blockwork and Marley Eternit weatherboarding. The two storey flats have their own separate front door entrances whilst the three and four story blocks share a communal staircase.

The new build project was awarded on a design-and-build contract to the main contractor Kier Milne with William Lippe Architects acting as the design consultants. Premier Construction caught up with Stephen Martin, Senior Architect at William Lippe Architects, to find out more about the project.

He said that the works have progressed well with practical completion due at the end of February this year. Bad weather did create some initial difficulties for the team in 2013 and another recent issue for the construction team was the amount of rock which needed to be broken out and removed within the car park and landscape areas, which has delayed completion of the development.

The site is surrounded on three sides by existing houses and high rise flats. Parallel to development is North Anderson Drive which provides one of the arterial routes through Aberdeen. Due to the site being almost completely surrounded by houses working hours were coordinated in order to avoid undue noise which would disturb nearby properties.

The flats will be complete by the middle of February with the external works, car park and landscaping due to be completed by the end of February.

Stephen Martin added: “This development is a project we have worked on with Langstane Housing Association over a number of years and are delighted works finally commenced on site started last year. We are very pleased with the end product which looks aesthetically very sharp and bright in this area of Aberdeen”.
