Located in the home of golf, Hotel du Vin’s latest offering opened its doors to St Andrews on 1st April this year.
Since opening the first Hotel du Vin in Winchester 20 years ago, the brand has now opened 14 further hotels across the UK. The current venture celebrates the double decade achievement in style, opening the first luxury hotel within St Andrews old town, perfectly positioned, just in time for the summer’s most prestigious golf tournaments.
Situated in an unbeatable location, St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin boasts exceptional views of the historic town from all areas; the bar, bistro and bedrooms.
Following suit from the groups previous successes, St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin plays is home to 22 spacious bedrooms, containing luxurious Egyptian cotton beds, flat screen TV’s and Lavazza coffee machines, maintaining the usual high standard of the group. Each of the hotel bedrooms are en suite, most of which feature a large monsoon shower, while others boast freestanding bath tubs. Bathrooms come kitted with Miller Harris exclusive ‘Terre du Vin’ products, making the overall experience that little bit more special.
The hotel Bistro, overlooking the waves of St Andrews’ Bay, serves Hotel du Vin’s signature French inspired menu for lunch and dinner, placing emphasis on good, quality wines. The bistro serves dishes which rely on fresh, seasonal, locally sourced, organic produce at moderate prices. The summer menu presents appetising Grissini or Cheese Straws, complimented by crisp Chablis, followed by simple but delicious starters such as Crab Toasts and Roquefort or Pear and Walnut Salad. For main course, the bistro offers Steaks, Roasted Lamb or Coq au Riesling amongst others. The restaurant also offers an array of delicious homemade desserts.
In regards to Breakfast, St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin offers ‘The Country Table’; a take on the classic continental breakfast, which customers can enjoy alone or accompanied by cooked options such as Eggs Benedict, French Toast, Hotel du Vin Full Breakfast or a healthier version of the latter.
Hotel du Vin boasts an extensive list of wines and champagne, all of which have been carefully selected by Hotel du Vin’s expert sommelier, and are closely matched with the seasonally changing menu of Bistro du Vin.
A few steps away from the bistro, the hotel also has a cosier bar area, where afternoon tea and pre or post dinner drinks can be enjoyed.
Both the dining areas and bedrooms are adorned by dark leathers and subtle patterns. The bistro has dark reclaimed floorboards and old fireplaces, making it feel warm and homely, whilst still being on trend.
Merging traditional and contemporary styles, the St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin property will refresh the interiors of the public house situated next door. The pub has been a long standing feature of the town serving students, golfers, locals and visitors on a daily basis. Hotel du Vin plans to develop a traditional pub menu to accompany the large selection of beers, ales and Scottish whiskies the pub is already renowned for.
The project was completed for Malmasion Holdings by main contractors George Sharkey and Sons and with the help of architects Curious Group.
Marc Dorrin from Curious Group said:
“Working for Malmaison as a brand was important for us because they don’t have a specific ‘cookie-cutter’ brief. Malmaison have very different properties to other big hotel brands, they’re very individual which means we can express our own designs a lot more. With a company like Malmasion it’s important for Curious Group as a brand to build a good working relationship with them.”
Curious Group specialise in design, interiors and architecture. The company have worked on projects in sectors across the board; education, hospitality, retail, residential, social housing, industrial, commercial, conservation and urban regeneration. Prior to St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin, Curious Group have worked on projects with companies such as Optical Express, Ford and Stewart Travel, as well as working with Malmaison on another hotel in Aberdeen.
Main contractors, George Sharkey and Sons are leading contractors in fit-out, construction and property services in the United Kingdom, with bases in both Edinburgh and London. The company have worked across the board for a varied line of prestigious clients such as The Royal Bank of Scotland, Topshop, Natwest, BP, Tesco, Miss Selfridge, Radisson, Halifax and the NHS amongst others.
The opening of St Andrews’ Hotel du Vin has brought the opportunity for a variety of new events to be held in the town. The hotel offers wine tasting and karaoke and can also accommodate for large meetings and weddings. Meetings and weddings will be helped along by the hotels events planner, and will be held in either the ballroom or the Macallan boardroom, both of which boast different benefits depending on the type and size of event you require. The bistro additionally offers a private dining facility for small gatherings, a pre wedding meal or simply for a more private setting for lunch with friends and family.
