City Tavern

City Tavern, Newcastle upon Tyne’s Northumberland Road

Since being established in 1923, the City Tavern on Newcastle upon Tyne’s Northumberland Road has undergone multiple name changes and renovations.

This spring, Bar Hound Ltd brought the past into the present, taking the pub back to its former name and traditional style.

Opening its doors to Newcastle, the popular pub will be gaining Gastro-pub status through a hearty food menu, suitable for the whole family.

City Tavern has a varied menu, served from midday to 9pm daily, with options available for every appetite. The Monday to Saturday menu has an eclectic mix of traditional English foods, as well as foods from around the world. Think sausage and mash meets Mexican bean pots. For a smaller appetite, or a lunch time treat the menu also offers sandwiches; fish fingers, chicken clubs and everything in between.

The pub offers an alternate Sunday menu; maintaining some of the most popular options from the weekday menu, such as Steak and Ale Pie, Hot Roast Beef Sandwich and Penne Arrabiata. The Sunday menu also has the welcome addition of a classic Sunday lunch.

A children’s menu is available consisting of smaller versions of the main meal offerings, along with the availability of a selection of bar snacks such as a Cheese Board, Bread and Olives, Pate and Thick-Cut Chips.

The renovation project, undertaken by Bar Hound Ltd, began after Managing Director David King sold his previously owned 11 pubs, a number of coffee shops and his previous design company last year to begin a new venture. Speaking about City Tavern David said:

“The venue used to be an old sports bar which wasn’t really suited to the area, the pub is just off one of Newcastle’s busiest roads, in the heart of the city’s retail district, making it a prime location for a gastro-pub.”

Main contractors, AE Maintenance won the contract for the property last year, followed by Bar Hound purchasing it in January this year.

David King added:

“The turnaround was a major job and a massive investment for Bar Hound. We were allowed into the pub by the previous owners, to knock things down and have a look around and we discovered some old fireplaces and other historical features from the original building which really gave us an insight into the history of the property.

“It’s such a transformation from what it previously was, it was quite small and the first floor was ignored because of an unappealing staircase to the rear. We’ve now added a staircase as soon as you enter so now both of the floors are in use. It’s really nice to see that the customers we hoped to catch the attention of have been attracted. Since re-opening we’ve had really good feedback; everyone that comes through the door has said that they really like what’s on offer.”

The rebranding and renovation project has also seen the introduction of private dining facilities for parties of various sizes; the private dining areas can cater for between 12 people and 300 people, so are suitable for an intimate meeting or a large get together.

The pub is situated in a prime location; Newcastle’s busiest shopping area and one of the busiest shopping areas in the United Kingdom. Northumberland Road is home to the largest Marks and Spencer in the United Kingdom outside of London, and the Eldon Square shopping centre; which holds a wide variety of retail brands. Moments away, City Tavern is an ideal destination for pre, post or during shopping dining, or light refreshment.

City Tavern also happily welcomes dogs, making it an ideal destination for a whole family day out. The bar houses three of its own dogs, commonly known as the bar hounds. It offers water dishes and a special menu for canines consisting of Cheese Paws, Sunday Roast Bones, and Venison Sausages with Apple with a Chipolata option for smaller dogs. All of the bar’s dog food is given in large portions for more than one serving and is given in a re-sealable bag for you to take home.
