Yashin Ocean House, South Kensington, London, Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2014

Yashin Ocean House is a brand new modern Japanese restaurant located in South Kensington.

Situated on Old Brompton Road the restaurant boasts an impressive menu based entirely around fish and seafood, offering head to tail dining using every aspect of the fish from roe, to flesh, to skin. Yashin’s team of chefs are able to achieve a diverse menu by using a wider range of seafood cuts as well as utilising their expertise.

JYSM were the interior designers during the project and working with the client have transformed the space into an elegant, vibrant venue. Yashin Ocean House contains a dining room displaying elegant Edwardian architecture with contemporary touches including a turquoise counter made from glazed volcanic stone. From here diners can witness the impressive knife skills of the Yashin team.

Jun Ogura, the main designer at JYSM, has worked on many commercial projects since moving to the UK from Tokyo. Having had such success in the design industry Jun was ecstatic to work on the Yashin Ocean House project. He told Premier Hospitality:

“Designing hospitality spaces is great as it allows you to create a special moment for the customer. Yashin Ocean House is a high end Japanese restaurant that customers frequent on special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and date nights. If the atmosphere and interior design is successful then customer’s time becomes more precious; this is what I love to do.”

Yasuhiro Mineno, Executive chef and co-founder of Yashin, is one of the most prominent sushi chefs in the UK, if not in Europe. Yashuhiro’s career began in his late teens, initially as a kaiseki chef in Japan. The talented chef grew up in Shizuoka, a prefecture in Japan renowned for its rich variety of seafood, fresh wasabi and flavoursome green teas, and so is ideally placed to open up a venture such as Yashin in England.

Yasuhiro has also worked as Head Chef at Nobu Group’s Ubon in Canary Wharf for three years. In October 2010, Mineno and close friend Shinya Ikeda, Head Chef and co-founder of Yashin, opened their second restaurant and in September 2013 unveiled their newest venture Yashin Ocean House.

Shinya Ikeda, eager to offer authentic Japanese food outside of Japan, has worked at the prestigious Yumi Restaurant, acting as the Head Chef thanks to his exceptional talents. Shinya also has his own restaurant, ‘Without Soy Sauce’; Ikeda had noticed previously that customers often dip dishes into soy sauce and so the only flavour that could be tasted was the soy sauce alone. Yashin Sushi & Bar based around this concept.

Yashin Ocean House has been shortlisted in this year’s Restaurant and Bar Design Awards within the category of Best London Restaurant.
