Granger & Co, Sekforde Street, London

Situated on Sekforde Street, London, Granger & Co Clerkenwell is the latest eatery from internationally renowned restaurateur Bill Granger.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks and joins sites in Notting Hill, Australia, Hawaii and Japan, to round out the Granger & Co portfolio.

The restaurant is divided into a bar, dining room and kitchen, with back of house operations including staff areas, office space and a waste storage area. A cold room, dry store, liquor store, washroom facilities and linen storage space complete the overall operation.

Work began on the project in March 2014 and reached completion in early May 2014. Bluecrow Projects Ltd was the main contractor on the project, whilst chartered architects and interior designers Tyeth Gundry provided architectural design services, working alongside Sydney-based designer Meacham Nockles McQualter.

Granger & Co Clerkenwell presents a tempting menu, with dishes including tea smoked salmon with green tea noodles, samphire, daikon & soy mirin; as well as parmesan crumbed chicken schnitzel, creamed corn and fennel slaw; and masala roast bream, with cumin tomatoes, watercress and apple salad.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality, Tyeth Gundry of Gundry and Ducker, said:

“Granger & Co are one of the few operators who not only talk the talk in terms of sourcing high-quality ingredients, they really do it! They are a good bunch of people too, always positive and full of energy.”

The new restaurant was installed into the site of a disused factory situated on the corner of Clerkenwell Green. The building dates back to the 1930s and the restaurant covers two floors, with 2000 sq ft on the raised ground floor and 2000 sq ft on the basement.

During the construction works there was a significant amount of structural work conducted, in order to form new staircases and to infill sections of the floor. As the site was located within a quiet village in London, noise and deliveries needed to be carefully planned by the construction team.

Main materials used in the construction process included Terrazzo floors and counters, bespoke lighting from Rankin McGregor Ltd, food hoists by Stannah Microlifts and ironmongery. The restaurant also includes bespoke furniture built by main contractor Bluecrow Projects Ltd, with lino inserts by Forbo Flooring Systems. To complete the project, the ceiling was clad in reclaimed hardwood, presenting an environmentally friendly addition to the project.

Discussing the addition of the new Granger & Co restaurant to the local area, Tyeth said:

“Clerkenwell will be delighted to have them I am sure. It’s a warm and busy place, located in a hidden corner off the green, so a place for people in the know, not so much the passing tourist trade.”

Tyeth added:

“Granger & Co are good at building relationships too and if you haven’t tried their Aussie Breakfast, then you are missing out!”
