Glazebrook House Hotel, Devon

Glazebrook House Hotel has undergone an extensive remodelling process following the introduction of new manager and owner Pieter Hamman.

Since buying the 1865 property in November 2013, Pieter has spent significant time and money redeveloping the outdated hotel, making it contemporary whilst working to maintain classic features and the hotel’s Victorian heritage.

The redevelopment finished in May this year and entailed a number of internal structural elements including a reduction in the number of bedrooms to increase the size, a remodel of the kitchen area to further increase the size and the addition of a patio area, adding al fresco dining facilities and bringing a new lease of life to the exterior of the hotel.

The 1865 property worked as private residence until the 1970’s when it became a hotel. The hotel has eight guest bedrooms and one bedroom for Pieter and wife, Fran, which they live in full-time.

The redevelopment updated the hotel making it contemporary and classic using a combination of materials such as leather, perspex and salvaged wood to create a unique look.

Working with Pieter Hamman, main contractors DS Developments and Hong Kong based Timothy Oulton Projects (led by architect Simon Laws), removed all wallpaper and painted the walls in dark shades, keeping original features including doors, windows and anything else which stood out as a heritage or interesting piece.

Each room is stunning in its design including gorgeous handcrafted furniture, eye-catching 3D effect marble tiles and luxurious en-suite bathrooms. Chandeliers, handmade velvet and Belgian linen curtains, as well as antique teak flooring tie everything together creating the hotel’s unique look.

The renovation project also involved an extensive reworking of the hotel’s bar and restaurant with both spaces being uplifted and revamped to create a special environment for guests. A brand new wine and whisky tasting room was created on the ground floor of the hotel.

All of the rooms in the hotel have been named after Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland characters, adding a touch of childhood magic to the guest experience. The designers have taken inspiration from the room names and as a result the hotels design echoes the renowned novel. Guests have the option to stay in the White Rabbit Room, Jabberwocky, MadHatter, Tweedle Deez, Cheshire Cat, Gryphon, Caterpillar or the Bread & Butterflies suite.

Through the collaboration of the hotel’s creative team and interior designs by Timothy Oulton, the hotel has been transformed, boasting a magical atmosphere sure to wow guests. The stunning British revival décor, sumptuous handmade furnishings and beguiling vintage and retro curios act as an ideal backdrop to a relaxing retreat.

The recent luxurious upgrade has made Glazebrook House Hotel the ideal event destination for weddings, family milestone events, corporate events and much more. The hotel’s picturesque views, beautifully maintained gardens and wonderfully secluded setting, make it the perfect, intimate, exclusive-use wedding venue.
