Dear readers,

Welcome to the latest edition of Premier Construction magazine.

In this month’s Premier Construction we take a look at the works at Derby College’s Joseph Wright Centre; we head to Sheffield to check out Portobello Point; and we look across the country at more of this year’s NHBC Pride in the Job Award winners.

At present, Derby College is implementing a programme of works designed to extend the college’s existing Joseph Wright Centre. Once complete, the centre will boast an additional 1200 square meters of space and will consolidate the college’s existing art & design provisions into one location. The project further enhances the centre’s ability to expand and develop and follows on from a previous extension which was completed in 2007.

Speaking to Premier Construction about the new extension project, Derby College Corporate Director, Nigel Gell, said:

“The Joseph Wright Centre was the first building we constructed after we undertook a three-way merger back in 2002. The centre was constructed in 2005, is located in the centre of Derby and houses all our A Level students as well as a wide range of other creative arts vocational courses.

“Due to the building’s initial success we built an extension in 2007; however as part of our on-going property strategy we decided to merge our existing A-Level art facilities with our vocational art & design courses and this has resulted in our requirement for a further extension of the centre.”

Meanwhile, Portobello Point in Sheffield is a stunning new student accommodation block from Omnia Space. Situated just off West Street, the seven storey building comprises 25 cluster apartments, providing rooms for 106 students, along with a common room and a state-of-the-art gym. Construction work began on Portobello Point in May 2013 and reached completion in August 2014.

Portobello Point was designed around a central courtyard, creating an area where students can integrate socially. The development includes a coffee shop style common room and gym and is set to become very popular with students.

And finally, following on from last month’s coverage of the NHBC Awards, we focus on another crop of award-winning developments. Read on to find out more about Bramble Walk, Earden Road, Worden View, Bay House, The Paddocks and many more.

With all this and more, join us as we continue to explore the beautiful developments that shape our landscape.
