A young construction worker who embarked on a plastering apprenticeship six years ago at Leeds College of Building is now working as a site manager on the College’s brand new state-of-the-art £16million education and training facility.

Jordan Ambler enrolled at Leeds College of Building in 2008 and over the next three years he completed Level 1, 2 and 3 plastering qualifications while working at Whitkirk Building Services in Crossgates.

The 22 year old then spent two years studying in the evenings at Leeds College of Building for a Level 4 Chartered Institute of Building Site Management qualification before securing a work placement at GB Building Solutions, who are the lead contractor on the College’s new campus. Jordan made such an impression that earlier this year the company offered him a job as an assistant site manager and he is now working on the College’s new 8,000 square metre building on Hunslet Lane and Black Bull Street in Leeds City Centre, which will complete early next year.

Jordan, who lives in Crossgates and attended Temple Moor High School, said:

“I never knew what I wanted to do when I left school, but I was always good academically and keen to learn a trade so Leeds College of Building was the obvious option. By the time I finished my plastering apprenticeship, I had realised that site management was an area that really interested me so I decided to continue studying and when Leeds College of Building introduced me to GB it seemed too good to be true.

“With the support of GB, I’m now hoping to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Construction Project Management at Leeds Metropolitan University which I’ll start in September 2015, and it’s great that my initial plastering Apprenticeship has led to this. I certainly never thought I’d be working on Leeds College of Building’s new campus and I’ve even been hosting site tours for the College’s tutors!”
