A project to create a modern and stylish house in County Antrim has caught the attention of judges at this year’s SBID International Design Awards thanks to what’s been taking place in the kitchen.

Nominated with the category of Best KBB Project – which recognises kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms in a residential space – Muckamore Kitchen is a fantastic living and cooking space which has become the real hub of the home.

Designed to offer practicality with innovation and comfort, Muckamore Kitchen is split over two levels and includes an island unit, full height windows and large sliding doors which lead to an outside terrace. The kitchen is light, spacious and stylish and is perfect for families, for socialising or as somewhere to whip up a culinary masterpiece.

Kitchen and furniture design specialists Canavan Interiors was responsible for the design of Muckamore Kitchen. Based in Ardboe, Tyrone in Northern Ireland, Canavan Interiors is a leading design practice with the ability to tailor projects to meet a client’s individual needs.

Keen to find out more about Muckamore Kitchen, Premier Hospitality caught up with Jason Canavan of Canavan Interiors to uncover what it takes to design such an innovative kitchen.

Jason said:

“Our client was looking to create something a little bit different; not just a kitchen but a kitchen, diner and living area. They had this new house but wanted something more from their kitchen, so we were recommended to them by the architects of the house and after bouncing around a few ideas we came up with this kitchen.”

One of the main features of Muckamore Kitchen is the kitchen’s island unit, which blends natural materials to create not only a great focal point, but also a practical work station. The palette of colours used on the island is reflected throughout the kitchen and spills out into the living areas to tie all of the different spaces together.

Jason commented:

“The island unit is very distinct, very different. As soon as our client saw it they fell in love with it.”

Work began on designing Muckamore Kitchen in 2013 and it was installed and completed in January 2014. As the kitchen involved some quite complex furniture, Canavan Interiors made sure that all of their measurements and angles were correct before proceeding with the project, ensuring a smooth installation.

Jason said:

“From start to finish this was a very intrinsic design, so everything was checked, double checked and even triple checked to make the process run as efficiently as possible.”

Both Jason and his clients were very happy with the finished kitchen, so it has been a bonus to see the kitchen nominated amongst other fantastic projects at the SBID International Design Awards.

Jason commented:

“This is the second year that we have entered the SBID International Design Awards and it really gives Canavan Interiors a boost. We are a small family business who is competing with some of the biggest interior designers and kitchen studios in the world, so this recognition alone is fantastic.

“Our main focus as a practice is our design and that is what makes us stand out. We are a small business with a big ethos and big ideas and awards like these help us to really push what we do.”
