Boningale GreenSky is the award winning green roof department of Albrighton-based Boningale Nurseries, who work with the experts at the University of Sheffield’s Green Roof Centre to develop and academically researched plug plants and substrates.

Boningale GreenSky’s SkyPlugs are plug plants that have been specifically devised for green roofs and mimic the conditions they are to be planted in.

To support its SkyPlugs, Boningale GreenSky has developed an innovative online tool selector at www.boningale-greensky.co.uk, which was recently recognised at the UK Grower Awards 2014. The substrate selector picked up the Best Business Innovation award for helping landscape architects and contractors choose the most appropriate plants and growing medium for their green roofs.

Boningale GreenSky Technical Green Roof Expert, Maggie Fennell, said:

“We launched to the commercial market at Futurescape 2012 and Ecobuild 2013; prior to this we had been carrying out commercial tests and market trials with green roof installers since 2011.”

One of Boningale GreenSky’s most recent projects saw the company work on a sustainable green roof at the new £250 million Center Parcs Village, Woburn Forest in Bedfordshire. Working with green roofing installers ABG, the company supplied more than 7,000 plants for the extensive green roof on top of the site’s Pancake House.

Boningale Nurseries has also been involved in a number of prestigious contracts, including the rooftop terraces at the prestigious new £188.8 million Library of Birmingham. The company also supplied nursery stock to several of this year’s 2014 BALI winners. In fact, all three winners in the Soft Landscaping Construction (Non Domestic) under £300,000 category had commissioned Boningale, to supply them with plants and shrubs for their projects.

Maggie said:

“Because of our academic links, as part of our membership with BALI, we have been involved with a number of regional presentations, where we have talked about the importance of placing the right plants in the right place to ensure they thrive.

“We strive to provide innovative solutions with scientifically supported best practice guidance.  The result is that customers benefit from the highest quality products and the expert support from our learned team.”

Maggie added:

“With Boningale Nurseries, one of the UK’s largest nurseries and environmental horticultural specialists, we are the only nursery that can supply both traditional nursery and green roof planting stock.”
