Welcome to the latest edition of Premier Construction magazine.
In this month’s issue we take a look at the impressive refurbishment works at The Dominion Theatre, as well as exploring how works to construct a new state-of-the-art pavilion at Somerset County Cricket have progressed.
Finally we take a look at the projects recognised in the 2014 GIA Design Awards; one of which is Charleston Square Affordable Housing Scheme to be awarded a GIA Residential Award for its environmentally friendly design.Charleston Square was commissioned by Loretto Housing Association and involved the construction of 53 homes on the former site of South Primary School in Paisley. The sustainable, low carbon housing development includes 37 socially rented houses, six townhouses located near Neilston Road and a courtyard building which comprises 10 supported flats for young adults, as well as a staff base.
Richard Hands, a partner from FBN Architects, said:
“FBN became involved with the project after putting forward initial design ideas to Loretto and winning the tendering process for the scheme. This development is now the client’s most energy efficient development so we are very pleased with that.”
In 2012 The Dominion Theatre began a scheme to revamp the building and since then have undertaken the biggest refurbishment project that the theatre has seen since it opened in 1929 seeing the theatre transformed to its original 1920’s grandeur. Works began on site in June this year and lasted for just 14 weeks. The £6 million project has seen the reinstatement of the Orchestra Pit, the leveling of the stage floor, a grid upgrade, structural and decorative works, as well as the installation of a new bespoke flying and loft block system.
Somerset County Cricket Club has also been revamping their facilities by constructing a spectacular state-of-the-art pavilion. The new pavilion has been hailed as a ‘brilliant addition to the ground’ by club chief executive Guy Lavender.
Guy commented:

They are a local company who take great pride in their work and I have every confidence that they will build a facility of which we can all be proud.”
