Maltese Architect Jonathan Mizzi has won the coveted UK’s Retail Week Enterprise Award “Store Design of the Year” for his innovative design of the Samba Swirl Store in Camden, London.

Mizzi’s four times nominated design piece for Samba Swirl, the first self-service yoghurt chain in the UK, stole the show at the prestigious annual awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Inspired by the vibrantly geometric painted facades of the favelas in Rio de Janiero, Samba Swirl successfully lures swarms of customers who are attracted into the store by pulsating LED lights emanating from every surface to then serve themselves frozen yoghurt from timber clad light reactive dispensing pumps. The fro-yo is then personalised with pick and mix fresh food toppings displayed within a multifaceted steel iceberg, the star centre piece of the Samba experience designed by Mizzi.

“We are fortunate to have clients such as Samba Swirl that really want to explore the boundaries of design. The Samba Camden store is a great example that the investment in to high quality, creative lighting and interior design can pay massive financial dividends. Swarms of customers are being lured in to the store off the Camden high street daily to serve themselves a healthy treat,” said Jonathan Mizzi, Director, Mizzi Studios.

David Packham, Founder Samba Swirl, said: “The branding had been overwhelmingly positively received, and enabled us to take the business to a higher level in terms of consumer and investor engagement.”
