The construction of a brand new sports village at New College Stamford has been completed following a year long project.

The sports facilities have been constructed as part of a joint venture between Stamford AFC, known as The Daniels, and Burghley Estates.

Works began on site in Autumn 2013 and completed in the second week of September this year, with students beginning to use the facility after October half term. R G Carter acted as the main contractor on the scheme and LK2 Architects carried out all architectural services.

The Borderville Sports Centre has been built on what used to be a Greenfield site. We caught up with Barbara Doxey, Head of Estates and Facilities at New College Stamford, to find out more about the project. She commented:

“The site had to be levelled and the football ground has been levelled and set up with two stands; a standing and sitting stand. The new sports building contain facilities for the football club as well as facilities for college use. It comprises a sports hall, sports science room, a gym and fitness suite, two classrooms and a function room belonging to the football club.

“Outside there is a 3G AGP pitch which is let in the evenings as well as being used by the football club and the college. Community pitches at the rear of the site have been seeded but aren’t ready for use until September 2015.”

The football pitch is FA accredited and the facility has been awarded the highest BREEAM and Secure by Design Awards for its security as presented by the Chief Commissioner of Lincolnshire.

Borderville Sports Hall is one of the main features of the new facility. The hall has been designed for multipurpose use and can be transformed to host a multitude of sports, many to national level. The halls floor space spans approximately 735 square metres and has been specially designed to maximise playability and relieve the stresses placed on bones, joints and muscles of the lower body during sport.

A specialist ventilation system has been installed as have lighting systems and a state of the art scoreboard which can be used in training and competition.

Barbara added:

“The old sports facilities at New College were tired. Stamford AFC had been operating since 1896 at their club in Stamford, on land belonging to Burley Estates, which needed upgrading. They gained funding from Burley Estates to move to this new site and gained planning permission; it was then that a partnership between the college and the club was formed and extra funding was arranged to create a sports village on the site for both parties to use.”

The Daniels first football match at their new ground took place in December 2014.

Barbara added:

“These are fantastic new facilities for the sports students especially as the old sports hall was built in the 1960s. The new village is also great for the community as we can now let the new facilities every night in the week and on the weekend. Community groups including local football clubs, roller derby clubs, boxing groups and antique fairs will be able to make use of the buildings.”
