Acre Mills- RICS Awards

A project to convert a Grade II Listed former wire mill into a state-of-the-art outpatient facility with office provision has been shortlisted for a RICS Pro Yorkshire Award.

The landmark healthcare project has been shortlisted in the Conservation category of the awards, which will take place on 15th May 2015. The scheme is the first phase of the Acre Mills projects which Jefferson Sheard is working on for the Pennine Property Partnership – a partnership between Henry Boot Developments and the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust – and has been well received since completing.

During the works a considerable amount of care and attention was taken on the project in order to retain the existing shell of the building, as well as the original cast iron columns and roofing materials. In addition, any modifications to the building were delivered in such a way that they can be reversed if required in the future.

The RICS Awards showcase the achievements of the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment. Jefferson Sheard has enjoyed previous success with the Old Mill Lane Campus at Barnsley College winning the Community Benefit category in 2013 and South Cheshire College being awarded highly commended for Design and Innovation in 2011.

Managing Director of Jefferson Sheard, Tom Rhys Jones, said:

“I’m pleased that the project is attracting attention. An appropriate new use has been found for the type of building which is no longer suitable for modern industrial use, but one which is also too important a part of its community’s history and character to be demolished.

“Not only has the historic listed building been preserved but there has been no compromise in the provision of the office and clinical space, designed and constructed to modern standards, which is able to be maintained cost-efficiently yet enhancing the experience of NHS personnel and patients by means of its distinctive character.”

Chris Race, project Architect, added:

“Acre Mills is a fantastic new asset for both the NHS Trust and the local community. Since opening in February 2015 the feedback from patients and clinicians has been extremely positive, with some commenting that the former wire mill feels like their ‘own private hospital’. Our aim for Acre Mills was to not only provide a centre for the NHS Trust to deliver excellent healthcare but to reflect the needs of the individual, focusing on the ‘patient’s journey’ creating a calming environment which may be needed at a particular time of difficulty.

There are a huge number of former mill buildings spread across the country and this project demonstrates that, despite how complex the brief may be, these buildings can be brought back life to serve the local community once again.”
