Coniston Hotel & Spa, White Rose Awards

Voted Yorkshire’s “Large Hotel of the Year” by Welcome to Yorkshire in the current White Rose Awards, the 4-star Coniston Hotel in Skipton is developing a new state of the art spa, which will be opened this autumn.

Located on the A65 Skipton to Kendal road and nestling in 1,400 acres of beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside, including a 24 acre lake, the Coniston Hotel is one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems. The hotel and its grounds form part of the Coniston Estate, which has been home to the Bannister family for more than 40 years.

Creating at least 35 new local jobs, the 16,500ft² spa development is located adjacent to the hotel with peaceful and stunning views over the 24-acre lake and the wider Yorkshire Dales countryside.

Mark Green of Yorkshire-based Curveline Design and leading spa consultant Nicki Kurran, who has previously worked with Champneys and The Dorchester, are working with the project team to deliver the spa, which is being constructed by Barnfield Construction.

The building will incorporate a wide range of facilities including a gymnasium, eight spa treatment rooms, an aerobics and dance studio, a 15m level deck swimming pool, an aroma sauna, steam room, salt room, an indoor bubble pool and an outdoor infinity vitality pool with uninterrupted views of Coniston Lake and surrounding estate.

Structured around a portal frame, the spa is designed to complement existing buildings within the hotel grounds and features a palette of external materials including floor to ceiling curtain walling, slatted timber panels and render, a metal brise soleil running around the exterior and a standing seam aged copper effect roof. The works also include a landscaped external decking area with seating.

Michael Bannister, Chairman of The Coniston Hotel, says: “It’s going to be an exciting 2015 for all involved in the development of the spa and the hotel, and before the end of the year we will have created a fantastic new facility for our hotel guests and local residents, and one which will not only create many new jobs but will bring more visitors to this part of the Dales for years to come.”

The Coniston Spa will be open to hotel guests and day visitors from the local area, and will offer an exclusive club membership limited to a set number of members.

The project is due for completion in October 2015.

Curveline Design Ltd has enjoyed working with the Coniston Hotel on a range of their hotel refurbishments and new developments including the Huntsman’s Lodge, Macleod’s restaurant, function rooms, reception and retail areas.

Mark Green of Curveline Design Ltd, said:

“This is a lovely project to work on. We also have five other spa projects on site with a total value of around £16m.These projects, for privately owned hotels and hotel chains, include a very prestigious scheme for the Midland hotel in Manchester. In fact two of our schemes have been featured in the European Spa magazine this month alone.

“The Coniston Hotel has been a valued client for a number of years and we were very keen to be involved in such a prestigious addition to the hotel. It felt important for us to be involved in the design of the new spa as we had already designed several of the main areas in the hotel and this is such an exciting addition to the hotel in an area that we specialise in.”
