Carillion helped deliver the design and construction of a new prison facility on behalf of the Scottish prison Service in 2010. The firm worked on the site of an old prison, which had been demolished under a previous contract, and a WWII barrage balloon site.

Acting as the main contractor on the £98.5 million contract works began on site in Feburary 2010 and completed by November 2011. The Scottish Prison Service’s requirements were precise in respect of the accommodation to be provided, which they needed to be delivered across two house blocks, each with three levels and four wings.

The design of the prison maximises the use of the core area where the staff are stationed, as well as providing a wing length which suits the staffing levels of the prison facilities.
The site comprises of the Facility Building and the Gate Building. The Facility Building is located in the centre of the site and includes the laundry, workshops, gym, games hall, dentist, pharmacy, multi-faith and prisoner reception. In addition, the building has a faux street which affords natural lighting to route being used to the House Blocks from the Gate Building.

The Gate Building is located at the front of the site and offers a civic façade to passing commuters. The structure acts as the first contact for staff and visitors alike. Two routes lead from the reception area, one route for staff to allow them to eat, shower and change in readiness for work. The other offers a route for visitors of prisoners to the visits areas or interview rooms. The project also included sports pitches, exercise areas and hard and soft landscaping.
