Main contractors Brynwell Southern specialise in the delivery of new build and refurbishment projects for the leisure industry.
The construction firm have worked with a plethora of well known clients since their inception 18 years ago, offering services to the leisure sector mainly in the south of England.
Premier Hospitality caught up with Daren O’Neil, a Director and Shareholder at Brynwell Southern, to find out more about the company and the latest ventures they have been a part of. The firm have recently worked with Apricot Inns undertaking a number of renovation projects to revamp their Poole and Bournemouth Alcatraz branches.
The Italian restaurant in Bournemouth has recently been remodelled thanks to extensive refurbishment works. Working alongside Apricot Inns, Waddington Architects and Hollingson Design, Brynwell stripped out the venue installing new bars, floors and decorative features.
The large conservatory at the front of the property has been removed and an outside dining area has been created offering diners a new, al fresco space to enjoy their food. Daren commented:
“The clients wanted to refurbish the venue as it was tired and needed a general spruce up so we have installed new seating and given it a new layout.
“The opening of the venue, six months ago, was delayed due to Bournemouth Council shutting down the area which is near a busy roundabout.”
After the success of the Poole and Bournemouth venue Brynwell are now set to undertake a third Alcatraz renovation project in Camberley, Surrey. The Brynwell team are pleased to be continuing their longstanding working relationship with Apricot Inns, who also operate a small chain of public houses alongside the Alcatraz brand.
Brynwell Southern have also worked with KOI to revamp The Red Lion in Witney, transforming it from a late night music venue into an all day dining destination. The construction firm became involved with the project, which opened in December 2014, through the Local Hero scheme run by Greene King which supports local provenance in food and drink via a unique risk and reward agreement.
As part of the works the kitchen was extended, the interior and licensed areas were fitted with new floors, lighting and carpets, but the bar remained in-situ. As well as acting as the main contractor Brynwell also delivered design services on the project illustrating they are able to provide a turnkey solution to clients.
Brynwell Southern also worked closely with Foundation Inns on their Craft & Grill Bar brand having recently completed their branch in Walton-upon-Thames and now working on The Kings Head & Bell in Abingdon.
Brynwell began works on the Abingdon venue for Foundation Inns in May this year and are set to complete the scheme by the end of the month. The grade one listed structure is 400 years old and so needs to be treated sensitively throughout the works in order to retain the authentic features of the building.
Craft & Bar Grill in Walton-upon-Thames is another venue Brynwell have been instrumental in revamping. Working alongside Waddington Architects and the clients, the firm undertook an internal refurbishment scheme and added a new frontage to the building to the 120 cover venue.
In order to reconfigure the space the team have broken up a number of rooms in the building to create more opportunities for private dining. A number of feature walls act as a main feature in the space boasting vibrant Kerma, Australian wallpaper as do the glass cabinets containing cases of craft beers.
Another reputable client Brynwell work with is Bell Isle, owners and operators of the Meat & Barrell in Portsmouth. The construction team began works in October 2014 and completed the scheme in December in time for the Christmas trade.
Located on the corner of a prominent road in the city, the venue was formerly a Chinese restaurant that had closed down. As part of the project the old shop front was removed and a new façade, made out of timber and glass, has been fitted.
The venue comprises a number of industrial features including exposed RSJ’s and air conditioning systems, as well as high ceilings giving the space a warehouse feel. Brynwell worked with the in-house Bell Isle design team in order to make the clients objectives a reality.

Recently we have designed sliding security windows which can be fitted in a period property and blend in with the buildings traditional style.
“We also deliver projects to strict timeframes, with a quality finish and offer ongoing support to the customer.”
