A project designed to expand facilities for timber specialists James Jones & Sons Limited continues to make great progress.

The project – which comprises the construction of a new workshop in Forres – is scheduled to reach completion in June 2015. The workshop – which is being built on an area of land adjacent to the company’s current base of operations will measure approximately 30 meters by 50 meters once complete.

Work started on the project in December 2015, but despite the problematic weather conditions associated with winter, the work has run very smoothly.

Commenting on the project, General Manager of James Jones & Sons Limited, Brian Robertson, said:

“This is a very specific project for us which will help us to build a new finger-jointing line.

“At James Jones & Sons Limited we manufacture timber I-Joists, which are used by all of the national housebuilders, as well as other areas of the construction industry. The joists are used for flooring and roofing and are produced in lengths of up to 12 meters – which means a long piece of timber is required to manufacture them. As trees don’t always tend to grow that long, we have to finger-joint the timber together.

“So this project is very important to us, as if we don’t have this new workshop then we would have to continue to buy finger jointed material from Scandinavia, which is expense. This new workshop will bring the operation back in-house and is key to what we do.”

Brian added:

“We’re just finishing everything off now, so we should be completely up and running within a month. This project has run very smoothly so far.”

In order to construct the new workshop, James Jones & Sons Limited bought a neighbouring property, which was demolished to make way for the new facility. Inverness-based company, MAKAR is the architect-led design and building specialist on the project.

The installation of this new workshop is a significant milestone for James Jones & Sons Limited; a company which continues to grow.

Brian commented:

“Our existing capacity was almost at a maximum – we were certainly pushing it to the limits – so the time was right for this new facility.

“We are constantly growing the business here. We started this site in Forres 17 years ago, with just myself and five guys, but we currently employ a staff of around 68 so we are ever expanding and this project is just another example of this.”

With roots which date back to the 1830s, James Jones & Sons Limited is the UK’s second largest pallet producer with a 40% market share of the new-build flooring market. The company is the UK’s first manufacturer of I-Joists, as well as JJI-Joists.

James Jones & Sons Limited is currently in the fifth generation of the Jones family and employs a team of dedicated staff, many of which are seen as the most innovative thinkers within the timer processing sector. The company values its staff and sees all of its team as being a key part of the business’ success.
