Bringing a whole new dimension to the picturesque Inn at West End in Woking, Surrey is a major refurbishment including the construction of a bedroom extension, the upgrading of the kitchen, dining area and bar and extensive re-decoration.
The development has been a long-held ambition for pub owners Gerry and Ann Price and has been 15 years in the making before finally come to fruition.
The project was designed by Hen Design and carried out by Kircher, who were both praised for their work. “Hen Design were very good and Kircher did a brilliant job and were really good to work with,” said Ann Price.
Incorporating 12 boutique luxury rooms, the new single storey bedroom extension has been designed in the style of a stable block with a central clock tower. The timber framed building features rendered external elevations and a pitched tiled roof.
“The AA four star rated bedrooms include high quality fixtures and fittings throughout, top quality beds with Hypnos mattresses and wet-room style bathrooms with heated mirrors. We have decorated each room individually and each has one wall decorated in a highly distinctive wallpaper,” said Ann Price.
Other features include 27″ HD TVs with HDMI inputs, broadband Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet, and safes sized to accommodate shotguns (for organised shooting events). Two rooms cater for dogs and one for guests who require additional accessibility facilities.
“A particularly striking design feature of the extension is the vaulted ceilings which give an impression of spaciousness. We have had some very good feedback from guests already,” said Ann Price.
The project also involved the complete re-fitting and slight extension of the kitchen with new equipment, including a new combi-oven, extract units and a new walk-in fridge installed to hold large cuts of meat and game. A new pastry making room has been added and a stockpot room has also been created to contain the 4ft diameter brackpan used to make the stock which gives the restaurant’s sauces their incomparable depth of flavour.
“I must say that our chef and his team are delighted with their new kitchen,” Ann Price commented.
With a focus on fresh, seasonal produce cooked in an unhurried modern British style, everything on the menu in the venue’s award-winning destination restaurant is home-cooked and sourced mainly from local suppliers. Game often comes from the Royal Parks in Windsor, many vegetables from local allotments and fresh fish from Brixham (admittedly not local but stunning, especially on Wednesday’s fish nights).
Other works carried out in the project include the installation of a new bar, the expansion of the bar area with more tables, and the creation of a new reception area designed for guests checking into the new bedrooms.
Accessed through double French doors, a second single storey extension with rendered blockwork elevations and a glazed solar reflective orangerie style roof has also been built onto the restaurant to compensate for the space taken up by the new reception area. A former external washroom type building has been been retained and incorporated as a design feature within the new extension, and now contains a six seater dining table.
External works on the scheme included re-landscaping of the inn’s existing car park.
