Brighton and Hove welcome a new addition to the dining scene with the recent opening of SkyFall. Offering a burger and lobster style menu, the latest opening is set to take Hove’s hospitality industry by storm.

Guy Piper Architects worked in harmony with the hospitality brand Barrow and Thomas Restaurants to create a live music lounge with a perfect mix of fine wines and champagnes, a modern interior, high quality food complemented with outstanding customer service.

Guy Piper Architects began refurbishment works for SkyFall in May and the project completed at the end of July. Keen to find out how they adapted to the industrial brief, Premier Hospitality Magazine caught up with Tom Guy and Charlie Piper, Partners of Guy Piper Architects to hear about the finished product.

Tom Said:

“It was great to work with Barrow and Thomas Restaurants, we had many very constructive design workshops to finalise the industrial themed the design.  The client allowed us to be creative with different solutions to create an interesting space. We used copper, grey and yellow tones to create a modern industrial look with exposed brickwork and reclaimed wood.”

Creating a collection of textures with a fantastic colour palette, Guy Piper Architects created different features on each wall.

Charlie added:

“We stripped back the old Moroccan restaurant to its empty shell, the plaster was stripped off one wall to expose the original brickwork.  The brief included wine storage to one of the main walls; therefore we came up with a bespoke design to turn this in to a feature.  The wall was clad in plywood, which was painted dark grey.  Painted timber dowels were then screwed into the plywood, which would support the wine bottles creating an interesting visual illusion.

With diamond shaped ceramic tiles we created a bespoke tiled wall of wood.  The diamond tiles were CNC cut by a local wood workshop, Cutting Edge CNC, and painted on site in a mix of yellow, white and greys.

The bar is made from reclaimed wooden palettes and topped in copper. The same reclaimed wooden palettes were used, to create the stage area, which wraps around the existing dumbwaiter to conceal it from the main Restaurant. The contractors, Filby Builders based in Brighton, who led the construction, also made plywood tables and created copper sleeves to fit over the top.

The copper is reflected outside the restaurant, by creating a copper cladding for the front door creating a bold entrance on the street front with a bespoke copper handle and copper laser cut letters for the signage.

In the autumn the refurbishment will begin on SkyFall’s second floor, adding an additional 45 spaces to their already 50 covers, as well as providing a place for private parties, wedding receptions, conferences and business meetings.

Bringing a new idea to Hove’s high street, SkyFall prides itself in being a live music venue supporting local talent. We spoke to Lindsey Brett from Barrow and Thomas Restaurants.

Lindsey said:

“In this area of Hove there are a lot of culture based restaurants, you’ve got Thai, Indian, Chinese and Italian, but nobody has opened a British Burger and Lobster restaurant, we wanted to be the first. SkyFall is something different; it’s something unique and combined with fashionable interiors, relaxing music and exceptional food. We are bringing sexy back to Hove!”

“We’ve created a live music lounge, so rather than somewhere to go and watch an artist perform, we’ve created a space where artists perform in order to deliver background music to our customers. We’ve been in communication with jazz, blues and soul singers as well as supporting local artists who play instruments such as the piano, guitar and violin.”

The restaurant is using locally sourced products in both the menu and service. Sourcing glassware from Brighton Catering Supplies and promising, all their meat will be provided by local butchers, Southwick Square Meats. Seafood comes courtesy of BNFS Fish.

SkyFall is bringing a brand new and exciting eatery to the city of Brighton and Hove as well as providing a breath of fresh air to the local area.  SkyFall has also confirmed they have secured premises in central Brighton for their second Burger and Lobster inspired restaurant, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!
