Hotel Indigo York

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), one of the world’s leading hotel companies, has revealed its latest boutique hotel – Hotel Indigo – to the historical city of York.

Hotel Indigo York opened its doors on Walmgate, a thriving gourmet destination and the birthplace of York’s chocolate making empire.

The intimate 101 room hotel is ideally situated within a short distance of some of the city’s most wonderful restaurants and bars, boutiques, artisan shops, famous tea-rooms, museums and galleries. From the building design to the hotel’s artwork and locally-inspired menus, every Hotel Indigo property is distinctive and takes influences from its surroundings.

Celebrating the true flavours and locality of Yorkshire, Hotel Indigo York has united with the award winning Yorkshire Meatball Company — one of the UK’s only speciality meatball restaurants, offering guests delectable and innovative dishes using the finest local produce. The restaurant serves meat, fish, vegetarian and sweet balls all hand-rolled in-house, as well as a wide selection of Yorkshire craft beers.

Hotel Indigo York will also be working with York’s Chocolate Story, offering leisure packages to provide visitors with an opportunity to taste York’s chocolate heritage on their guided chocolate tours.

Mike Sweeting, Hotel Manager of Hotel Indigo York commented:

“The neighbourhood of Walmgate provides the perfect base for exploring York’s rich cultural heritage. With our chocolate inspired décor and emphasis on real local flavours, we are ready to give guests an authentic Yorkshire welcome.”

The hotel interiors echo the neighbourhood’s cultural charm and have been woven throughout the hotel to create stunning décor. The design hints at Walmgate’s chocolate heritage, including Rowntrees (the famous English confectioner who started life in this neighbourhood in 1725). Centre stage on the ground floor is a red brick feature wall, influenced by the architecture of Walmgate which has been admired by visitors to York over the centuries.

Tom Rowntree, IHG’s Vice President for Hotel Indigo, Europe said:

“We’re enormously proud to be opening our first Hotel Indigo property in York. Hotel Indigo provides a refreshingly local experience for guests through stylish design, locations in unique and culturally-rich neighbourhoods, topped off with intimate, personalised service. We’re the place to discover something new and feel inspired whether you’re a local or a visitor, travelling for business or leisure.”

Hotel Indigo is a swanky boutique brand owned by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) which launched in the United States in 2004, making it one of IHG’s youngest brands and today there are over 100 hotels in the global system size and pipeline combined. Houghtons delivered a truly unique and local design experience for Hotel Indigo in York

For over twenty years, Houghtons in Baildon, West Yorkshire has been providing a first class service for architects, contractors and project managers to create unique hospitality and retail interiors. Their highly skilled and experienced team has created high quality bespoke furniture and custom shop fittings, manufactured to exacting specifications for many hotels, pubs and nightclubs, schools and universities, offices and leisure facilities and hospitals.

Recently, one of Houghtons’ clients was appointed to design the brand new, themed, 102 bedroom and F&B area of the boutique Hotel Indigo in Walmgate, York. Incorporating and evolving a new design template to roll out worldwide for Sojourn Hotel, Houghtons were selected to work closely with the client and Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) to realise a truly unique & local design experience reflecting the history and culture of this historic destination city.

Houghtons promise to always deliver a quality, service, reliability and a wealth of experience in the manufacturing and installation of bespoke joinery products throughout the UK. However ambitious the plans, and however short the timescales, Houghtons will do everything they can to make it happen – and if they really don’t think it’s going to be possible, they’ll let their clients know straight away. That’s because experience has also shown them that it’s better to be honest than to over-promise.

Working closely with their clients, Houghtons turn initial vision into a reality, ensuring that quality is never compromised at any point in the manufacturing process. At all times the director in charge of the project will be the person clients contact for progress updates and answer any queires – it’s this personal approach that really sets them apart.

Houghtons also believe in seeing every project through to beyond the installation, whether or not it’s being installed by them – this is because Houghtons believe that the after-care service they offer is just as important as every other stage of the process.
