Melton cattle market gets makeover

A multi-million pound project that will give Melton Mowbray’s historic cattle market a revamp will be managed by leading independent management, design and construction consultancy Pick Everard.

Existing facilities at the cattle market have become outdated and Melton Borough Council wanted to give the site a revamp to secure its future for years to come – with a £5m redevelopment of the livestock market.

The first phase will see the current outdated buildings demolished and a brand new, state-of-the-art facility erected that will be fully compliant with modern animal welfare standards.

The project, which has been procured through the Scape framework, will deliver 4,295m² of accommodation including covered pens and specialist equipment for viewing and auctioning livestock along with improved access for visitors.

Partner at Pick Everard, Alastair Hamilton, said: “With grant funding being key to the success of this project, our expert advice and management of the design, procurement and construction programme and our ability to align these with the availability of funds has been critical.

“This is an exciting regeneration scheme for us to be involved in and demonstrates Pick Everard’s ability to work across a wide range of sectors. We have a great deal of experience working under the Scape framework and are delighted to have been appointed to deliver what is a significant scheme for Melton.”

The cattle market redevelopment is seen as vitally important to cementing Melton’s status as a market town, which attracts food tourists eager to enjoy its independent food retail offer and to visit the home of well-loved products including Melton Mowbray pork pies and Stilton cheese.

Cllr Joe Orson, Melton Borough Council’s spokesman for the rural economy and environmental affairs, said: “The livestock market is hugely important to the town and it is an anchor for so many small and local businesses, it attracts many visitors to Melton Mowbray.

“It is also important for the viability of the town centre that the market remains vibrant. The livestock market has regional significance and its edge of town location makes it unique.”

Pick Everard is providing cost and project management services via the Scape framework as part of the project on behalf of Melton Borough Council, working with the building contractor and designers to ensure the development is completed smoothly and against a challenging budget and timeframe.

Contractor Morgan Sindall is delivering the project through the empa (East Midlands Property Alliance) framework.
