Situated in the heart of the Cranborne Chase, Dorset, 10 Castle Street (formerly Cranborne Lodge) is a private members club housed within a beautiful Grade II* Listed building.

The building – which belongs to the Cranborne Estate – is a magnificent house complete with extensive gardens, and provides the perfect setting for this fantastic venue.

10 Castle Street is divided into three floors: a ground floor for the public and two floors for private members. The ground floor houses a public bar, restaurant, drawing room and terrace, whilst the first and second floors incorporate a drawing room, a billiard room, a children’s play room and nine bedrooms. An additional bar and restaurant – used exclusively by private members – is also housed in the building.

Alex and Gretchen Boon – who previously owned and operated the highly successful King John Inn in Tollard Royal, Wiltshire – are the talented team behind the project. Alex is overseeing the building work on the project, whilst Gretchen is the lead interior designer on the scheme. Woodford Scott is the main contractor, with Clarks Construction appointed as the building firm on the job.

Speaking to Premier Hospitality about their involvement and the look of the club, Gretchen, said:

“The project began around two years ago when we first took a look around Cranborne Lodge. The Cranborne Estate was looking for a way to make better use of the lodge and wanted to promote local employment within the village and also provide the house with a business that could maintain the property.

“At the time we were working at the King John Inn, which was doing very well, so we felt like it was the right time for us to branch out and work with the Estate to create 10 Castle Street.”

Gretchen added:

“With regards to the design, as the property looks vast from the outside the whole point of the design was to make sure the interior could feel as relaxed as possible – we want 10 Castle Street to feel like a home-from-home. We want members to feel as if they are staying in a country house, with elements of travel and exploration dotted throughout – we’re trying to create a British colonial feel.”

Planning permission – to turn the building from residential use into commercial use – was granted at the beginning of 2015, allowing the work to get underway. Since this time, work has continued to make good progress on the building and the project is scheduled to reach completion at the end of October.

Dan Syndercombe is the head chef at 10 Castle Street. Dan is passionate about his work and will bring this passion from the kitchen to the table in all of the dishes he serves, once 10 Castle Street opens.

Discussing the importance of the project, Gretchen said:

“This is a lifestyle business. We’ve always been in this industry and we really enjoy it. It’s a very sociable business, we’ve got two young children who love the village, so really for us 10 Castle Street allows us to live here and enjoy everything that comes with that. We are pleased to be involved with 10 Castle Street.”
