Creating Kelty Community Centre
A new community centre – created specifically for the people of Kelty – has been constructed in the town of Kelty. The project – which was implemented by Fife Council – has seen the erection of a brand new community centre, which boasts a range of services all designed to bring the community together in one location.
The Kelty Community Centre project took shape on Main Street, as an extension of the existing Kelty Primary School development. An ‘unfit-for-purpose’ church and community centre – which were previously located on the site – were demolished at the beginning of the project, in order to make room for the new facility.
As well as the creation of a new building, the project included the creation of a dedicated parking area, as well as some external landscaping works. Temporary classroom accommodation was also put in place throughout the duration of the construction programme, to ensure classes at Kelty Primary School could continue without too much disruption.
The new building includes a two classroom extension to the school, as well as additional toilet facilities, which connect the two premises together. Through a secure connecting corridor the school now has access to all the facilities in the community centre.
Fife Council developed the new 2,400 sq m building – which is attached to the primary school – in order to house a range of facilities, including a large games hall, multifunctional dance studio space, youth club facilities, a music studio for recording, a learning suite and a crèche/after school club. Additional facilities include a local library and council offices, as well as a large outdoor football 3g pitch for use by the local semi-professional team, the school and the local community.
The project utilised a range of materials, including structural cross laminated timber panels for the main structural frame, rendered blockwork, timber cladding with standing seam and single ply roofing systems.
Speaking to Premier Construction, Gavin Turner, Chartered Architect for Fife Council, said:
“As the existing centre was not entirely fit for purpose the new community centre makes a significant improvement to the community and education facilities in Kelty.”
The Kelty Community Centre project was approved by councillors at the Cowdenbeath Area Committee on 1st May 2013.
