Gus Robinson Developments Ltd will start work on a £4.8m scheme later this month in the heart of an ever-growing community.

Work originally started on Great Park, in Newcastle, back in 2001, and since then more than 1,500 homes have been built along with a new school, a state-of-the-art office complex and community sports facilities.

North East construction experts Gus Robinson Developments Ltd has secured a contract to build apartments above retail units which will form another facility for the community.

Work on the site, which is located three miles outside of Newcastle city centre, is due to get underway at the end of March and is expected to take 12 months to complete.

Steve Bell, Managing Director at Gus Robinson Developments, said: “This is the biggest scheme we have done to date, and we were delighted when we got the news that we were the preferred developer. It is quite a big project as the apartments are being created above retail units. Over the years, Gus Robinson Developments have carried out a wide variety of commercial construction projects, many of them being in the retail sector. It is only over the last five years that we have been involved in building affordable housing.

“This is the first time we have been able to showcase both parts of the business within the same project and the whole of the team are looking forward to seeing the scheme progress.”

Gus Robinson Developments will create a total of 38 two-bedroom apartments at the site on behalf of social housing provider Benicia Homes.

The project adds to what has been a positive start to the year for the firm, which is also due to start work on the former Plawsworth Road School site in Sacriston, which will see 21 houses built in partnership with Prince Bishops Homes.

That contract will also last for 12 months, with a mixture of three and four-bedroom houses being built.

Work is also underway at Kirkwood Drive in Kenton, Newcastle, where a 15 apartments with specialist communal facilities is being created for adults with learning difficulties to enjoy independent living.

Steve continued: “That project is being carried out on behalf of ISOS Housing and Newcastle City Council.

“We have always been very strong in securing work around our traditional heartland of the Tees Valley, so it is pleasing to be moving into new markets further north and we are confident that will help us as we continue to actively seek new clients and opportunities.”

The latest work keeps Gus Robinson Developments Ltd on course to reach a turnover in excess of £20m by March 2017.
