Two Yorkshire businesses have started work reinforcing an iconic Yorkshire bridge and strengthening an 11-storey London building, using innovative carbon fibre technology.

Adept Civil and Structural Consulting Engineers have carried out engineering designs for Fibrwrap UK to strengthen the deck of Scarborough’s iconic Peaseholm Glen Bridge, with more than 900 square metres of carbon fibre.

Fibrwrap UK, which is a global company with regional offices in Leeds and Hull, is one of the UK’s leading structural strengthening specialists and provides an innovative structural repair service that uses glass and carbon fibre reinforced polymers.

Adept has also designed one of the UK’s biggest ever strengthening projects that uses fibre reinforced polymers, which is on site now.  The project will see Fibrwrap’s technology used to strengthen the floor slabs and shear walls in an 11 storey former office building at Archway, in North London, to enable two extra storeys to be added as the building is converted into luxury residential apartments.

Other high profile work that Adept has recently completed for Fibrwrap include a bear pit at Dudley Zoo, reinforcing floor plates on the maternity ward at Barnsley General Hospital so three brand new birthing pools could be installed, repairing water pipes at E.ON Energy’s power station in North Wales and strengthening floor slabs at Blackburn Cathedral.

Fibrwrap’s Managing Director, Jamie Dempster, said: “Our technology enables buildings and other structures to be strengthened, using lightweight carbon fibre as opposed to concrete or steel.

“However, although the technology is relatively quick to implement, compared to traditional reinforcement methods, the projects can be very complex and we often work on live sites and in areas where there isn’t space to use materials such as concrete or steel.  Adept has a superb understanding of these constraints and the company is able to adjust to all environments and sectors, which makes them an ideal firm to work with on a wide range of our projects.”

Erol Erturan, Adept’s Managing Director, said: “Fibrwrap’s technology is hugely effective in adding major structural strength and its uses are endless, so we’re delighted to be working with the firm on these latest prestigious projects.  Unlike concrete or steel, carbon fibre doesn’t have a British Standard design code, but we have established an unrivalled understanding of the material.  Our success lies in our ability to produce accurate project evaluations, effective designs and precise calculations, which continually translate into successful projects.”

Adept was founded in 2007 and employs a team of 30 in Leeds, Manchester and London, predominantly working across the commercial, warehousing, retail, educational, healthcare, and residential sectors, providing a full range of civil and structural engineering solutions. These include surveys and reports, feasibility advice for new schemes, BIM services, geo-environmental studies, site investigations, conceptual and detailed drawings, flood-risk and drainage assessments as well as highway design.

Fibrwrap operates globally and has over 25 years’ experience in structural strengthening, concrete repair and the carbon fibre strengthening industry.
