Sherbrooke Castle Hotel refurbished

Sherbrooke Castle

Situated in Glasgow, the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel is a grand 4 star hotel crafted in rich red sandstone and set in wonderfully landscaped gardens. The Sherbrooke combines luxury and comfort, to provide the perfect stay for any guest wishing to escape the hardships of real life and experience the charming experience that this hotel offers.

In order to freshen up the interiors and improve facilities, the hotel has recently undergone a refurbishment to the banqueting space, conservatory, accommodation and public areas – which includes the lounge bar, restaurant, library, bedrooms and main lobby. Developments commenced in January 2014 and were completed in January 2016.

Therese McCulloch, Director of Sherbrooke Castle Hotel, informed Premier Hospitality of a few details regarding the hotel’s transformation:

“Given the nature of the building as we are a small privately owned hotel, and the castle was built in 1896. The refurbishment had to consider the banqueting and events space for up to 200 persons. We also have a total of 18 bedrooms in the hotel, as well as our public areas and private dining areas. Lastly we focused on our lobby as we felt this was one of the key aspects of the building to consider, as this is the first impression and welcome that we give our guests at Sherbrooke Castle.

“We have focused on soft furnishings which are contemporary but still in keeping with the historic nature of the building. We used Tektura Wall Covering as well as Chelsom lighting as we felt these worked well within the castle.

“The artwork within the hotel was done directly by focusing on the history of the hotel, as it was originally built as a private house for famed Glaswegian builder John Morrison who is responsible for various well known buildings within the city – for example, Chamber of Commerce, Kings Theatre, GPO Building, Co-Op Building. Therefore all of the artwork focuses on buildings he was involved in the construction and design of. The castle boasts various original features such as woodwork and stain glass panelling, and we have restored these to make them focal points within the building.

“External works involved re-pointing of the red sandstone brickwork to maintain the integrity of the castle.”

Therese McCulloch headed the refurbishment programme liaising with all contractors and suppliers, who were used through the duration of the works. Great input was also taken from the staff working within the hotel so the team was able to contribute on various elements of the refurbishment with their knowledge and experience.

“There has been no impact to our guests as we have remained open for business as usual throughout the duration of the refurbishment programme. The refurbishment was scheduled around business levels.

“Our biggest challenge was to co-ordinate with all contractors and keep to our time schedule so as to not impact on the business. We also found it challenging to source materials that were sympathetic to the style of the building.”

When asked how the feedback has been since the refurbishment, Therese replied:

“Excellent, we have received fantastic feedback on all aspects of the refurbishment – we are delighted with the end result and the encouraging feedback we have received.

“We feel it is necessary within the hospitality industry to continuously re-invest in the business to ensure that it exceeds the expectations of our guests.”
