A North East civil engineering firm has secured a £3million contract to support the construction of a biomass combined heat-and-power plant (CHP) located in Cramlington, Northumberland.

The Owen Pugh Group, which is headquartered close to the site in Dudley, has been appointed by Danish principal contractor Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) to undertake the bulk earthworks on the eight-hectare site, which will be home to the new Cramlington Power Plant.

The work, which is expected to take twelve months to complete, will involve the construction of access roads, drainage, attenuation ponds and the installation of multiple services and ancillaries.  The plant, which is owned by Cramlington Renewable Energy Developments Ltd, is expected to be up and running by the end of 2017.

Over 30 Owen Pugh operatives from Owen Pugh Civil Engineering, including construction, drainage and infrastructure specialists, are currently engaged in the project, as well as 15 managerial staff.

Jamie Macleod, Site Agent for Owen Pugh Civil Engineering, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed for BWSC to undertake this significant bulk earthworks project on what is a pioneering development for North Tyneside.  As a local business working with an international client, we’ve been able to furnish BWSC with our local knowledge and expertise to progress this exciting scheme.

“As a full service civil engineering company, we’ve enlisted specialists from across all areas of the Owen Pugh business including construction, earthworks and drainage to ensure we deliver on time and on budget.  The project has helped to safeguard a number of jobs in the local labour market for the next 12 months.”

Jonas Jacobsen, Department Manager for the Civil Works Construction Department at BWSC, said: “The conditions on site are challenging, and we need a team of contractors, who are all flexible and able to perform very high quality of works within a short period of time. We are therefore pleased to work together with Owen Pugh on this prestigious project, which will deliver green energy to the area in 2017.”

Cramlington Biomass CHP Plant, is being built by Cramlington Renewable Energy Developments Ltd, a project company composed of Estover Energy Ltd, John Laing plc and UK Green Investment Bank plc. The plant will generate electricity to the public power grid and produce heat for two neighboring pharmaceutical companies.

The Owen Pugh Group comprises four trading companies operating in the civil engineering industry, undertaking earthmoving and demolition, drainage and groundworks, plant-hire and haulage, quarrying, inert waste and drain cleaning, and CCTV surveys. The group is headquartered in Dudley near Cramlington, with other bases in Blaydon, Middlesbrough and Bassington Lane in Cramlington, as well as Marsden Quarry and employs over 400 people across its business.
