 Bath Racecourse

Bath Racecourse in Lansdown, Bath has undergone redevelopment work and re-opened to the public on Friday 15 April, just in time for the 2016 race season.

The racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located on Lansdown Hill, just north of Bath. At 780 feet (238m) above sea level Bath is Britain’s highest flat racecourse – even though National Hunt courses Hexham and Exeter are higher. Racing was first recorded at Bath in 1728. During World War II the racecourse was used as a landing field by the Royal Air Force and named RAF North Stoke.

The Kelston Hospitality Stand is part of a £1.2m refurbishment project funded by Arena Racing Company (ARC), the UK’s leading largest racecourse group in the UK, which features a ground floor bar, nine premium suites and the Mornington restaurant. The development over looks the race finishing line and features a private balcony.

Work has also included removing the front façade and extending the balconies on the first, second and third floors, as well as installing a lift. A new ground floor bar, a complete refurbishment of the boxes and toilets has also been undertaken.

Work on the four storey building commenced on 29 September 2015 with the project completing on 8 April 2016. The main contractors on the project were TDWG and the main architects were D5 Architects. Couch and Consulting Engineers were appointed as the Civil and Structural engineers on the project.

Paying homage to the local area’s attractions and historical features, it was decided to name the new facilities after integral assets to the area that everyone loves and cherishes. As you walk through the gates in 2016, guests will see a plush new racecourse. Bands of buttermilk and French grey visually add a touch of class to the new racecourse with guests given the opportunity to watch the action from the Beckford Bar. Named after William Beckford, a wealthy local property mogul, he built the statuesque Beckford tower which can be observed over the top bend of the racetrack.

The exterior of the building has been completed with a colour render system. Landscaping work has also been undertaken as part of the project with work taking place in the immediate proximity of the Kelston stand.

A spokesperson for The Design Works Group, the company that lead the fit out of the project, commented: “We are very proud to have completed the project on time and on budget. As a company we aim to provide great interior solutions at affordable prices and the transformation of this building is something we are delighted to have achieved.”

July will then see the launch of the three tiered Langridge Stand with a stunning Royal Crescent suite, perfect for dinners and weddings, with panoramic views over the track and the rolling Somerset hills.
