Leyton’s new star shines bright

Leyton

Adding to their eccentrically lively collection of London public houses, The Electric Star Group recently opened their fifth site, The Star of Leyton – an impressively transformed new venue at 116 High Road, Leyton, London.

Formerly The King Harold pub, the venue has been fully rejuvenated with the group’s signature brand of community hangouts packed with personality, and bursting with great food, good booze and a huge dose of mischief.

External re-painting, together with the addition of a new sign, hanging baskets and etched widows bring a bright new look to the exterior.

Hackney-based artist Esther Raymond of Lady Ray Creative returned for a third time to add her creative flair to the interior, having previously worked her magic on the decor of both The Star by Hackney Downs and The Jackdaw and Star.

The interior has been completely redesigned with new carpets and banquette seating and stylishly surreal wallpaper by Timouros Beasties, together with blue painted woodwork, exposed brickwork and a re-commissioned fireplace.

A mix of the classic and contemporary, the main bar has been painstakingly resurrected, quite literally returning from the ashes after having been ripped out and dumped in the cellar.

An unusual visual display is being created by inviting customers to leave items in a box at the venue, with a selection of these being used to adorn the walls around the bar.

The dining room centrepiece is one of the two golden palm tree light fixtures used as part of a set design used on Paloma Faith’s ‘Fall To Grace’ tour, and was purchased in a charity auction.

The second tree shines brightly on the huge, outdoor terrace at the rear, decked out with a seating area, including a raised section with eight private heated cabanas and a small function space.

This latest addition to the quirky Star chain is very much in the spirit of its siblings, following in their foodie footsteps and partnering with local street food operators, delivering a menu of curbside staples with a twist – including big juicy burgers with interesting and unusual sides.

The Star of Leyton also offers a great selection of wines, kegs, cask ales and lagers, together with a programme of monthly tasting sessions and cocktail masterclasses as part of a fun-packed programme of events which includes Tuesday quizzes, DJs, sports screenings and Karaoke events.

The Star Group now has a total of five venues in in Bethnal Green, Kings Cross, Hackney Downs, Homerton, and Leyton.

The group was born from founder Rob Star’s vision to create a traditional family-friendly pub with good beer, decadent times and a shared space for locals to unite – a dream made possible through a winning combination of ingenuity and goodwill.

He runs each establishment with the ethos (in his own words), “with each venue we try to create a space that we would want to frequent ourselves with the right mix of great entertainment, quality food and a superb drinks selection, that can be enjoyed in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.”

Today, the Star Group venues have become staple parts of their neighbourhoods.
