Sea Spice

Sea Spice

A combination of local Suffolk produce and classic Indian flavours originating over 4,000 miles away. Brand new restaurant Sea Spice in The White Lion Hotel, Suffolk, is the first sit down Indian restaurant on the Aldeburgh coastline.

Local produce and daily caught fish such as Alderburgh lobster, as well as offering an array of regional dishes from Goan inspired food, is what makes this restaurant so unique. The contrasting menu works perfectly, and the interior also expresses this mixture of cultures.

Designers of Sea Spice were Azoulay Interiors, an interior design and interior architecture company based in London. The design brief was inspired by its costal surroundings whilst maintain centuries-old period features from the original building.

Deep rich colour tones were incorporated throughout the restaurant, compatible with the dim hanging lighting and bespoke rattan chains. The floor didn’t involve much attention, during the early stages of decoration the old carpet was stripped back and revealed beautiful dark oak flooring – matching perfectly with the rest of the space.

The main contractor was Darush Noori from Ashridge Building and Maintenance Services, a company who work closely on a number of projects with Azoulay Interiors. Work began in January, and the soft launch was in April. The feedback so far has been very encouraging – the space was originally used as an old conference room so the client and the visitors are delighted with the transformation whilst being able to retain original features.

However there contractors were on a very tight deadline that couldn’t be altered. As all the tables and chairs were custom made, it was difficult to get a definite date for the delivery. The chairs were made in France and delivery times were really uncertain due to strikes which had been happening. Regardless, a deadline had to be decided as the project had already been underway for a few months, so the team was left with 4 weeks to complete everything. The print outs and adverts all had the exact date of the opening, too – so the deadline was a stubborn one. But, after a huge amount of effort, the restaurant is up and running and the hard work paid off.

Alexie Azoulay of Azoulay Interiors, told Premier Hospitality:

“This was the first restaurant we’ve done, so it was really important to us to get it right. Usually we work on residential projects where we are given a specific brief, so doing a restaurant was completely different to the norm Rather than creating a design in harmony with the tastes and needs of particular clients, we had to come up with a design that would appeal to a majority – if you think it’s going to work, you do it!”

Alexie added:

“I learnt a lot from doing this project, and I am really excited about the next restaurant we are about to start work on.”

The seaside restaurant is now open for business for everyone to enjoy and indulge in delicious Indian foods with local roots.
