Sylvan Court

Sylvan Court is a new sheltered housing scheme currently in development in Sarisbury Green, Fareham.

The development, built on the site of the former Coldeast Hospital, is part of a major redevelopment put in place by Fareham Borough Council that will include a housing estate, cemetery and leisure centre. Once completed the development will house 36 extra care flats with 25 one bedroom and 11 two bedroom flats. Part of the previous Cold East Hospital land, the build began in July 2015 and is due for completion in January 2017. The flats will be spread across three floors, and include communal areas such as an activity room and a lounge. As well as these areas there will also be facilities such as a hairdressers and a laundrette for use by the residents. The communal public garden will have benches and cycle storage that will be available for residents and visitors alike.

Drew Smith Ltd worked as the main contractors on the £4.7 million project along side HGP Architects, who were the architects helping to design the build. Partly funded by a £720,000 grant from the Homes and Communities Agency, the scheme will provide more affordable housing for the town’s elderly population.

The building, a masonry construction with a supporting steel frame, will consist of external brickwork and timber cladding as well as glazing and fibre cement panelling.

With the roof completed, the dry lining and second fix to the building internally is well under way. Each flat will have their own balcony or patio and will be accessible for wheelchair users along with the ability to cater to a wide range of support needs thanks to special design features such as level access showers.

There have been minimal difficulties in terms of the design and building process due to the careful liaison between the recently completed residential development it is situated on and the contractors.

Progress of the development so far and the workman ship done has left meant the project is on track for its November 2016 completion. “The council is very pleased with the speed and workmanship that is taking place on the development,” commented Councillor Kay Mandry, Executive Member of Health and Housing, at Fareham Borough Council. The importance of the project is not lost to those working on the project as the need for this type of accommodation increases.
