Sourced Market: A modern farmers’ market cafĂ©

Sourced Market

Sourced Market uses the best of the UK’s small, artisan producers to bring the idea of farmers’ markets to the convenience sector serving commuters and tourists alike.

The original site can be found in the St Pancras International station, London. Opened in 2009, Sourced Market uses their carefully sourced products to create delicious food available to eat in or take away. Housing three different bars focusing on coffee, juice drinks and alcohol, along with a hot deli counter, gives this cafĂ© its farmers’ market feel. With food and drink ranging from breakfast sandwiches and stews to craft beer and smoothies, there is plenty to choose from in this unique eatery.

The successful St Pancras site paved the way for the second site in Marylebone that was opened this year. With a focus less on just grabbing and going, and more on sitting and enjoying the food, this cafĂ© is a slight change from the one at St Pancras but still offers the same high standard of produce this business is known for. While both sites have seating areas, the Marylebone Sourced Market has a basement, which has been converted into a ‘Bottle Shop’ where there is craft beer and wine on tap, allowing for customers to drink in or take home. Rebekka Andrinudottir from DesignLSM, the interior design agency, comments that “this space is perfectly designed for private hire or housing events such as ‘Tap Takeover’ where craft beer or wine producers takeover the bar for the evening to promote their produce.”

The style of the cafĂ© is carried over from the St Pancras site, letting the produce speak for itself. “Our design intent was to minimise the visual impact of the interiors to allow the produce to be the heroes within the environment” said Rebekka. “We also concentrated on making the customers journey more streamline, creating a welcoming and relaxing ambience for people to browse, shop and dine within”. Working with the main contractor Ecsec Ltd, the project tried to combine the range of diverse products into a sense of unity throughout the store.

With large, fully glazed windows letting light and air flow though the site it is understandable that customers have been happy with the second location. The Marylebone site does not differ from the original much but it allows Sourced Market to keep their unique feel on a larger scale.

The popularity of Sourced Market has meant it has been shortlisted in the 2016 Retail Week Interiors Awards for ‘Best Leisure, Food and Drink Shop’. “It is great and such an honour to be shortlisted. It is good recognition for the successful collaboration between DesignLSM and the client,” said Rebekka.

Due to the success of the Sourced Market sites in both St Pancras and Marylebone, a third is set to open this year.
