TransPennine Express (TPE) have launched a new poppy train that will travel across the North and into Scotland to raise awareness of the Royal British Legion’s (RBL) annual Poppy Appeal.

Veterans, volunteers and an air cadet band joined the intercity train operator at Manchester Airport station to mark the occasion and launch the Poppy Appeal for 2016. This year the RBL is asking the nation to Rethink Remembrance by recognising the sacrifices made not just by the Armed Forces of the past, but by today’s generation too.

The poppy train will be spotted travelling right across the North and into Scotland, at destinations including: Cleethorpes, Huddersfield, Hull, the Lake District, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Preston, Scarborough, Sheffield and York.

Paul Staples, Fleet Director at TPE, said:

“I’m delighted that for the second year running we’re able to specially decorate one our trains to show our support for the Poppy Appeal. It’s an excellent way to recognise the great work the RBL does to support veterans and the Armed Forces. We will also be offering free train travel on our services to the volunteers and collectors who are taking part in one of a number of ‘Poppy Days’ at the end of October and start of November.”

Tina Pringle, Community Fundraiser for The Royal British Legion, said:

“We’re thrilled to work alongside TPE for this year’s Poppy Appeal. The design of the train will no doubt attract a lot of public attention, which will help us to raise awareness of the vital work we do – offering help and support to Serving Personnel, veterans and their families.”
