Park Hyatt

The first Park Hyatt resort in Europe only opened in June this year but that hasn’t prevented it from being nominated for a European Hotel Design Awards 2016 in the ‘Newbuild’ category. Located on the eastern corner of Mallorca, the complex is set in the exclusive Cap Vermell Estate in the style of an authentic hillside village.

Rather than one building, facilities and rooms are separated into blocks. Each of these blocks is based around their own agriculturally themed courtyard with every one of the 142 luxurious rooms providing a private terrace with a stunning view of the Canyamel Valley or the Balearic Sea.

Rooms are understated and defined by smooth, light colours enhanced by natural light from the terrace. Luxury comes in the form of mod cons such as a television in the bathroom. The principle architects on the project were DSA Architects. Mike Scott, managing director for DSA in Europe, talked to Premier Hospitality about the work:

“The local vernacular has thick walls and small shuttered windows with occasional narrow balconies, and by careful use of arcades, galleries, projections and offsets we have achieved a convincing blend where each room has a generous terrace. Within the constraints of a tight building programme, a fully-fledged and mature landscape has grown up seamlessly around the hotel’s sixteen separate buildings.

“A key feature of the hotel’s landscape architecture is a cascading stream that runs through the site, closely following the route that a river would follow. In the central piazza, at the heart of the development, is a prominent clock tower which is a visible focus point throughout the site.

“The restaurants, ballroom, meeting and events spaces, reception and bars are grouped around a broad entrance plaza. From this central space, accessible by golf cart, the blocks of rooms spread out around the contours of a natural amphitheatre.”

Mike added:

“We have created a set of buildings that will be seen in many different ways depending upon who is looking at it. To the tourist it is relaxed, charming and informal. To the guest at a special reception or the conference attendee, it is a luxurious space where all their needs are met. And, finally, to the hotel staff, Park Hyatt Cap Vermell is a rewarding, efficient means of satisfying their clients’ needs, wants and desires.”

Luxury facilities at the resort include a landscaped poolside terrace featuring three swimming pools, two of which are heated, and a separate children’s splash pool. The Serenitas Spa offers seven treatment rooms, including two couples’ treatment rooms, each with their own terrace. A variety of world-class dining options are also available, from locally inspired dishes to an all-day Bistro and a stunning tapas bar.

DSA Architects is a leading international architectural practice. The firm has extensive experience delivering landmark, signature projects from inception to the final handover. Park Hyatt hotels provide elegant and luxurious accommodations with an attentive personal service in an intimate environment.
