Breakfast Club – ‘70s style ‘caf’ brings back old favourites
Themed on the 1970s, a unique, fun new eatery which describes itself as a ‘family caf’’ serving up a heart-warming selection of all-day comfort food and drink, the latest The Breakfast Club venue, based in five adjoining shipping containers, has just opened in Boxpark Croydon.
Located in Ruskin Square, and completely constructed from shipping containers, Boxpark is a trendy new food and drink mall housing over 40 traders and has a capacity of 2,000 people.
Serving its signature all-day breakfast, together with a varied food and drinks menu, and open from 7am until late, the Croydon Breakfast Club venue is the tenth to be opened by the brand.
The interior design for The Breakfast Club Croydon was created by Finch Interiors, with the fit out being carried out by Embassy Joinery & Refurbishment Ltd, who were commended for their work. The project was carried out for joint owners of The Breakfast Club Jonathan Arana-Morton and Alison Rooney.
Spread over a single level, the interior is based on a quirky 197os theme, with many playful references to that era.
Sophie Finch, creative director of Finch Interiors said: “When designing the caf we were conscious of the limited life of the shipping container accommodation.
“The interior contains a main dining area, kitchen and a bar located near the frontage, which is entirely glazed. There is bench seating outside and the venue has two doors – one leading into the restaurant and the other for takeaway orders.”
Internally, the remaining three walls are lined in stained plywood, the ceiling is designed on a grid tiled system in traditional ‘caf’ style and the venue also has a plywood floor.
The furniture is reclaimed with a ’70s feel, including fibreglass chairs. Other design features include a variety of knick knacks such as specially made triangular banners on one of the walls which is themed on an American boy’s bedroom in the 1970s. There is also a curtain with a colourful vintage ’70s style motif across the back of the space to add colour.
Further design features include a huge handmade bespoke light box emblazoned with the message “Your mum loves sausage”. This is echoed by the message “Choose sausage” in large lettering across the shopfront.
“This is the tenth venue we have worked on for The Breakfast Club and every single one of them has been different as the client wanted to avoid any kind of corporate look. This is the first of their venues we have worked on using shipping containers – and like all the others, it has been great fun to design.
