RHS Garden Rosemoor

Rosemoor

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Devon is on the verge of adding another string to its bow with opening of a brand new events space in April 2017.

RHS Garden Rosemoor first opened to visitors in 1990 and ever since has developed a reputation for stunning garden designs and award winning food as well as being an idyllic location for weddings. The last decade in particular has seen Rosemoor expand its events programme through the addition of a marquee structure large enough to house flower shows, food fairs and lavish wedding receptions.

The new building, currently known as the ‘Garden Room’, will be a permanent replacement for this temporary structure. Jon Webster, RHS Rosemoor Curator, spoke to Premier Construction about the project, beginning with the design of the new structure:

“As with all our buildings within the garden, they need to sit well within the landscape but also make a statement. The Garden Room, as we are calling it, does this by blending in with existing buildings but it also looks different and unique.

“Local stone has been used on the north elevation and in the lobby area to tie in with stone walls on the entrance terrace whilst larch cladding fits well with the surrounding wooded landscape.

“The west side, which overlooks the garden, is nearly entirely fitted with glass bi-fold doors to let in light and make the building feel connected to the garden in which it sits. Big skylights add further light while the main hall is a big open space with a tiled floor, birch wall panels and a suspended ceiling all with acoustic properties to support our theatre events.”

The multi-functional nature of the building means the interior design has been one of the main challenges of the project. It needed to be durable for a flower show but at the same time in keeping with a wedding and corporate hire venue.

Looking ahead to the opening, Jon commented:

“For Rosemoor, it will mean a continuation of our wide events programme which requires the space this building provides, a better setting for our wedding packages and a growth in corporate hire now the building will be able to be used all year around.

“For our visitors, they will see a far nicer setting for all that we offer, from theatre productions seating 500 people to all the other events.”
