Opened in January, Golden Cross pub in Coventry, West Midlands recently underwent a £300k refurbishment by Star Pubs & Bars to refresh the important historical building.
Star Pubs & Bars is the leased pub business of Heineken UK, made up of around 1,100 pubs throughout the UK. Operating only leased and tenanted pubs and bars, they work together with licensees to run the best pubs and bars possible. Star Pubs & Bars bring an understanding of the market, as well as a range of training and support packages, for those that are looking to run their own pub or bar.
Golden Cross is one of the oldest pubs in Coventry and is one of the longest alcohol-serving venues in England. The Grade II listed building stands in the middle of the medieval heart of the city, close to the Coventry Cathedral, and dates back to 1583. The pub has been named one of Coventry’s most haunted locations.
The pub is a typical Tudor style construction with the new décor mixing the traditional timber frames, which came from the original bell tower of St Michael’s Church, with a more contemporary feel inside. The refurbishment of the pub’s interior created a lighter and cosier atmosphere that is perfect for the daytime and evening.
Oak beams have been stripped back to a more natural light oak and new lighting has been added. Partition walls have been removed to produce a more open plan space that works better for live music. The pub sits across two floors, which both have bars, allowing for a new 60 cover size.
The colour scheme of the pub uses a range of colours to create a fashionable interior with the ground floor using blues and dark greys and the first floor using a brighter colour palette of yellow, teal and a lighter grey.
“The original Tudor beams are still exposed in order to keep the history of the pub and the upstairs bar is very eye catching with the use of mirrors as well as ceiling high glass shelves,” commented Charlotte Porter, Owner of Golden Cross. The iconic exterior of the pub has been kept with just the black and white paint refreshed along with a brand new hand painted sign.
Following the refurbishment, casual drinking and dining will be on the ground floor with the upstairs a flexible area for both dining and live music. The small beer garden will also be available when the weather permits.
The menu has been upgraded as well with a range of high quality traditional pub dishes that include the Ultimate Cottage Pie and slow roast beef Chilli Con Carne. There is also an assortment of homemade burgers, light bits and sandwiches as well as all-day barista style coffee for those just looking for an afternoon break.
The drinks available will include cask ales, premium lagers and high quality wines. Along with the expected ranges of alcohol, Golden Cross will also stock the most extensive range of gins in Coventry allowing for regular gin tastings.
“I love that I’ve taken on such a loved building. After the refurbishment, it’s back to being a traditional pub and a nice place for people to go,” added Charlotte.
