A project to modernise Tottenham Court Road Station – as part of the Elizabeth Line/Crossrail project – has reached completion. The project was initiated to update and improve the existing station for passengers, including the provision of step-free access to both the Central and Northern lines.

As part of the project, Tottenham Court Road now has eight escalators, six new lifts, four entrances and a larger ticket hall. These new additions have future-proofed the station against a projected increase in footfall, following for the arrival of the Elizabeth Line next year and a suspected increase of around 30 per cent.

In addition to increased capacity and accessibility provisions, Tottenham Court Road Station now benefits from improved lighting, new tactile strips on platforms & stairs and contrasting handrails, which have been introduced to aid visually impaired passengers. Safety has also been improved at the station, with the introduction of new CCTV camera systems.

The station’s iconic Paolozzi mosaics, located on the Central and Northern line platforms and within the rotunda space, have also benefitted from the upgrade works. Up to 95% of the original mosaics have been retained during a repair and restoration phase of the works.

Mark Wild, Managing Director of London Underground, said:

“Tottenham Court Road is a vital station in central London, well placed for shopping streets like Oxford Street and also vital parts of the night-time economy like theatres, clubs and hotels.

“This bigger and better station means that customers using the Tube and the Elizabeth line will be able to pass through the station quickly and comfortably now and in the future.”

The completion of the Tottenham Court Road upgrade project brings the total number of step-free Underground stations to 71. The new inclusion of step-free access will make it more comfortable for elderly or disabled passengers to move around the city, as well as for parents with children and buggies to move around the station with more ease.

Tottenham Court Road is a part of the Elizabeth Line/Crossrail project – a £14.8bn scheme designed to transform rail transport across London. Once complete in 2018, an additional 1.5 million people will be able to access key areas of the capital within just 45 minutes thanks to the Elizabeth Line.

It is estimated that Crossrail is generating at least 75,000 business opportunities and is supporting the equivalent of 55,000 full time jobs around the UK, thanks to the Elizabeth Line.
