London School of Economics – Carr Saunders Hall

London School of Economics

Carr Saunders Residence Hall, a long time destination for students attending London School of Economics (LSE), has been given a contemporary upgrade. The refurbishment forms part of a long-term LSE commitment to upgrade its student accommodation portfolio to a modern standard and improve the student experience.

With construction taking place between August 2016 and April 2017, the project was a level 2 and 3 refurbishment which included the upgrade of student bedrooms and corridors. New flooring, lighting, decorations and furniture have been installed to a modern and functional standard. At a cost of circa £1.225 million across two floors totalling 1260 sqm, the project was led by LSE project manager Gabija Bingelyte with T&B Contractors Ltd acting as the principal contractor.

In total 64 student rooms have been transformed along with communal areas. They have been painted white to provide a light and airy feel in spite of size restrictions. Quirky space saving solutions include dual-use beds that can be folded into desks. Wardrobes, shelving and chest of drawers provide ample room for students to make their rooms feel like home.

The common room at Carrs Saunders Hall is open 24 hours a day and includes a pool table, games console, widescreen television and vending machines. A computer room is also available for student use on the ground floor along with a laundrette housing washing machines and dryers.

Carrs Saunders Hall is a catered hall which offers a wide range of hot and cold foods. Six evening meals and one brunch are served within the dining room and are included within the rent. Shared snack point kitchens are available with limited facilities on each floor. Externally, secure bike storage is available for a small fee.

Located just round the corner from BT Tower, Carrs Saunders Hall is ideally situated for transport links, shopping and entertainment. Two local supermarkets are within walking distance while two underground stops are also close by. Escaping the hectic nature of London’s capital and the stresses of study is easy with Regents Park on Carrs Saunders’ doorstep. The British Museum is similarly accessible.

While bustling during academic terms, LSE makes use of its prime accommodation during school holidays through its LSE Vacations scheme. Residences are opened up to the public for a central place to stay at an affordable price. LSE have been letting rooms since the 1980s and welcome more than 45000 guests each year. Offering safe, secure, clean and central accommodation, the revenue generated is put back into LSE to help keep rents as low as possible.

In addition to Carrs Saunders Hall, LSE operates a number of residential halls all within a 3 mile radius of the school.
