Gaucho opens

Gaucho

A true taste of Argentina has arrived in the Midlands with the opening of Gaucho Birmingham at the beginning of May. Located in the heart of the city’s financial district, it is the first site for the Gaucho restaurant group to open in seven years.

Blending the very best of Argentine hospitality, Gaucho Birmingham offers familiar high quality meat cuts and an extensive wine list that has been carefully curated. The 120-cover restaurant and bar is housed on the ground floor of a Grade II listed building at 55 Colmore Row with a warm, sophisticated interior inspired by rural Argentina.

Designed by Gaucho’s Creative Director Patsy Godik, Gaucho Birmingham consists of a reception, bar, main restaurant, private dining room and a wine room. A brand new back of house area and kitchen also had to be built to get the space ready.

The overall theme for the restaurant is organic, taking particular inspiration from the giant Ombu trees found in Argentina. When diners enter they are greeted by a large reception area with polished stainless steel and a bespoke wall lighting feature centred on leaves. The bar area contains timber, marble panels and a mirrored whisky wall.

It is in the main restaurant, however, where the organic, tree effect really comes to life. Overlapping timber on walls and columns creates a branch like effect with trees around the columns. Artwork has been provided Alex Turco with seating covered in Napa smoke and black ink upholstery from Sunbury. Flooring is a mixture of carpet and timber paths while the private dining room is glass-walled, with a cradle wine display that highlights the truly extensive nature of the wine list.

Work fitting out the restaurant was carried out over a 3 month period by Murray and Willis to create the stylish, warm and welcoming environment. Given the listed nature of the building considerations did have to be taken to meet planning requirements. External signage, for example, had to be carefully designed.

Commenting on this latest project for the Gaucho brand, Patsy said:

“It’s extremely exciting and gratifying. I love Gaucho, so rolling out a new Gaucho design for a new build is fantastic. This is the first new Gaucho restaurant to open in seven years, so it was always an exciting prospect. Birmingham itself is a very exciting and vibrant city so it was the perfect place for the new restaurant to open.”

Positioned in the centre of Birmingham’s financial district, Gaucho is in a highly prominent location and already looks set to be the go to destination for business lunches. The area has seen a significant boom in restaurant openings recently with Alchemist and Gusto also arriving in the area in the past twelve months.

Gaucho Birmingham will gradually begin to host events that have become synonymous with the brand. Currently, Gaucho Electro Brunch is available every Saturday from 11am-4pm. The Electro Brunch is a mix of cool beats and melodic tunes with a new brunch menu. All food and drink is included within the event price for two hours from sitting down.

At the heart of the Gaucho brand is the extensive efforts they go to provide the most authentic Argentine experience possible. The sumptuous beef they serve is imported to Britain exclusively from the Pampas – an area of Argentine lowlands famous for its fertile soil on which cattle can graze. Every cut of beef can be traced back to where it originated so Gaucho always know where their meat has come from. The wine list, created by Director of Wines Phil Crozier, is exclusive to Gaucho and so extensive that it contains the largest selection of Argentine wines outside of Argentina.

In Argentina, the Gaucho is an embodiment of national pride – a cultural icon held up as a symbol of honour and independence. Inspired and emboldened by their namesake, the Gaucho brand now operates 15 sites across the United Kingdom as well as locations internationally in Dubai and Hong Kong.
