Clogher House – National recognition for uniquely designed residence
Created by McGarry-Moon studio, the outstanding and innovative design of Clogher House – a private residence in a rural setting on the outskirts of Lisburn – has won the project a place on the shortlist for the RIBA Northern Ireland Awards 2017.
The project was carried out by main contractors Meegan Builders, who were praised for their high standard of work on the scheme, which involved the conversion of a previously dilapidated barn, with the addition of a new build element.
Steven Moon, director of McGarry Moon Architects commented: “We were very pleased to have made it to the RIBA shortlist and have previously won several other RIBA regional and national design awards.
“This residence is the result of clients who had the insightful vision to see beyond the traditional, whilst wishing to remain sensitive to the site location, existing ruins and neighbouring properties.
“Following a diligent analysis of the context, together with an appreciation of materials and spatial forms used in rural Irish architecture, that root buildings (and ourselves) in their locale, our first decision was to preserve and consolidate the large central existing stone barn.”
Initial works on the scheme involved the demolition of a number of buildings and considerable renovation of the barn. This included the addition of a new pitched roof with a zinc finish, as well as the comprehensive refurbishment of the remainder of the building, including the renovation and cleaning of the original stonework. New hardwood framed triple glazed windows were also installed.
Further works involved the construction of a new build cedar clad and glazed element, situated on a lower level and connected to the original barn by a glazed link.
External works involved comprehensive landscaping and the construction of a new perimeter wall.
Accommodation within the building includes four bedrooms (including two with ensuite bathrooms), a lounge, kitchen, family/dining area, utility room and a garage.
Steven Moon commented: “The design is topographically driven, maximising great views and creating a sense of connection between the building and its surroundings.
“Approached from the south-west, the dwelling has a restrained appearance, with the texture and colour of the timber cladding and zinc roofing material contrasting and interacting with the warmth of the existing stone walls. The integrity of the existing barn is retained whilst hinting at the dynamic design within.
“The new build element of the dwelling is slid behind the stone barn, with its internal floor levels coinciding with the natural fall of the site. The natural palette of materials further enhances the local characteristics, whilst the freshness of the white render and glass compliment the warmth of the natural stone and untreated western red cedar cladding.
“The contrast is married through zinc roofing on both elements, resolving any visual animosity.
“Internally a multi-functional fluid interior creates a dialogue between open-plan areas and more intimate enclosed retreats.
“The scheme deals intelligently with the climate and clients’ aspirations in a modern interpretation of a rural dwelling, creating a balance of tradition and innovation. As architects, it is this balance that we strive for. It is our hope, that just like good art, this residence will surprise, delight and intrigue.
“The contractors did a very good job and the client was very pleased with the end result.”
